Two Each from Football, Field Hockey Earn Conference Accolades

Two individuals from both the University of Rochester field hockey team and football team were awarded Athlete of the Week honors from the Liberty League, as announced on Monday afternoon.
 
All four class years were represented in the awards this week. From field hockey were sophomore Molly Newbold and senior Kara Houston, while junior Kyle Brainard and first-year Brock Miller were the football honorees.
 
Newbold was selected as the Liberty League field hockey Offensive Player of the Week, with Houston earning Defensive Player of the Week honors. On the gridiron, Brainard was selected as the Special Teams Performer of the Week, and Miller earned Rookie of the Week accolades.
 
For field hockey, Newbold scored two goals this week, with both being the game-winner for the Yellowjackets, helping URochester to a 3-0 week. Her first career goal came in overtime during Wednesday's matchup against Nazareth, with Newbold finding the cage in 3:30 into the extra period. Later in the week, Newbold scored with under seven minutes to go in regulation, putting Rochester up 2-1 in the eventual win over Hartwick. Overall, on the week the sophomore played 167 of a possible 183 minutes and had three total shots (2 on goal).
 
Houston picked up three victories in goal on the week for Rochester, combining to allow just three goals across three games while making 11 total saves. Overall, she logged 168:30 of playing time and combined on a shutout with a teammate on Friday against Brockport. Houston also made two saves in overtime during Wednesday's 3-2 victory against Nazareth and added one stop in the final 30 seconds during Saturday's 2-1 triumph at Hartwick.
 
Brainard had a strong season-debut in the kicking game for Rochester football, handling both kicking and punting duties in the 38-17 win over Olivet. Brainard made all six of his kicks, one field goal (23 yards) and all five extra points for a total of eight points scored on the day. Additionally, he had two punts for 85 yards (42.5 average), with one ending inside the 20. The junior also provided seven kickoffs for 402 yards (57.4 average), including one touchback.
 
The rookie Miller enjoyed success in his first collegiate game on Saturday, helping Rochester start the season 1-0. The first-year defensive back finished with six total tackles, five of which were solo stops and had one interception. The pick featured a 14-yard return in the first quarter, and helped to set up a Rochester touchdown to go up two scores early in the contest.
