MAYFIELD, OH – Despite a strong effort in doubles play, nearly earning that team point, the University of Rochester women's tennis team ended up dropping a 7-0 decision to host and 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Saturday evening at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.
The doubles point was hotly contested with the first and third doubles matches being split amongst both teams. At one, Hannah Kassaie and Katalina Wang of CWRU defeated
Lilly Caldwell and
Katie Yang 6-1. At three, URochester's
Lauren Kallas and
Hailey Kornbluth were winners, posting a 6-2 triumph against Yasemin Bilgin an Tara Markovic.
That set up the doubles point decider being at second doubles. In that match, which went to a tiebreak, CWRU's Katie Wong and Emma Thorns emerged victorious against
Sanjana Karnam and
Jasmin Toor. The score ended up 7-6 (7-2) in favor of the Spartans (2-0).
The momentum from Case Western Reserve earning that final doubles win carried over into singles play, leading to the Spartans posting straight set wins in each of those matches, leading to the shutout win.
URochester (2-1) saw Toor at fourth singles post the best match, battling Prachi Shah. Toor ended up falling 7-6 (7-5) and 6-3 in her match that closed out the evening.
At one, Kassaie faced Caldwell and made it a 2-0 CWRU lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The third Spartans point came at five when Markovic defeated
Natalie Debowski 6-1, 6-1, with the sixth singles match being the clincher with Trisha Vellanki earning a victory against
Esther Wang by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
Wrapping up the match, Wang defeated UR's Yang 6-0, 6-3 at number two before Atra Biria topped Kornbluth by the same score in the three slot.
Up next, the Yellowjackets take on Oberlin College on Sunday morning, finishing up the weekend of action on the court.
