Women’s Tennis Drops Nail Biter to Oberlin

OBERLIN, OH – Host Oberlin College earned a point at sixth singles, breaking a 3-3 tie to emerge victorious by a 4-3 score over the University of Rochester women's tennis team on Sunday morning at the Hunsinger Courts.

Oberlin's Olivia Guzman earned the clinching point of the match, winning in straight sets over Esther Wang by a 6-2, 6-1 score. That point secured Oberlin (1-0) a win in their season opening match of 2026. The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 2-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets started the match on a high note, securing the doubles point with wins at second and third doubles. URochester's Sanjana Karnam and Jasmin Toor opened things with a 6-2 win at number two against Frey Rahm and Rachel Allen. Shortly after, the team of Hailey Kornbluth and Lauren Kallas were 6-3 winners at third doubles over Olivia Guzman and Stella Kollmansberger.

Oberlin finished off doubles play with a win at number one, as Scarlett Kingston and Eva Lopez winning 6-4 against Lilly Caldwell and Katie Yang, but the Yellowjackets had already went up on the scoreboard 1-0.

To open singles, Kornbluth posted a straight set win over Rachel Allen at number three, winning 6-0, 6-1 to boost the Yellowjacket lead.

The Yeowomen bounced right back though, with Kollmansberger and Lopez earning wins at first and third singles to level the match. Kollmansberg topped Caldwell 6-2, 6-4, with Lopez edging Toor 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

URochester edged back in front thanks to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles by Yang against Kingston, but Oberlin was able to rally once again, securing the match win by taking points at fifth and sixth singles to close out the contest.

Rahm topped Natalie Debowski 6-4, 6-0 at five to reach 3-all on the team scoreboard, before Guzman earned the clinching point to end it.

The Yellowjackets return home next weekend and host Ithaca on Saturday afternoon before taking on St. Lawrence on Sunday morning.
