Women’s Tennis Rolls Past Ithaca, 6-1

The University of Rochester women's tennis team opened a three-game homestand with a 6-1 win over the Ithaca College Bombers on Saturday morning inside the Goergen Athletic Center.

URochester and Ithaca split the first two doubles matches, setting up a winner-take-all match at No. 3 doubles. Jasmin Toor and Sanjana Karnam earned a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Ekaterina Kelly and Ava Casell-Lapetina, while Alys Pop and Sabrina Cheung topped Lilly Caldwell and Katie Yang at No. 1 doubles, 6-2.

Then, No. 3 doubles, Lauren Kallas and Hailey Kornbluth would secure the doubles point for Rochester with a 6-4 win over Martina Nicora and Madeleine Sutro.

Things rolled into singles play with Pop topping Caldwell at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, to tie the match at 1-1 and put the Bombers on the scoreboard, but that'd be the last match Ithaca would win the rest of the way.

Kornbluth, Toor and Yang helped URochester win the next three matches, with Yang earning the clincher in the second singles match. Toor put the 'Jackets back in front with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Casell-Lapetina at No. 4 singles, while Kornbluth put Rochester in position to clinch with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.

Yang then clinched the victory, putting the Yellowjackets up 4-1 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, bouncing back from an opening-game defeat to open Cheung.

The Yellowjackets then wrapped up the match with two more wins, as Kallas made quick work of Kyra Terman at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0 while Natalie Debowski topped Kelly in three games, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 10-6.

Kallas, Kornbluth and Toor were all double winners for the 'Jackets, who move to 3-2 with the win, while the Bombers drop to 3-2 with the loss.

Rochester next hosts St. Lawrence on Sunday, Feb. 22, inside the Goergen Athletic Center, with doubles play set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
