‘Jackets Blanked by St. Lawrence

Visiting St. Lawrence University invaded the Goergen Athletic Center on Sunday and came away with a shutout victory, winning 7-0 in a non-conference women's tennis matchup against the University of Rochester.

The Saints (4-0) swept all three doubles matches and then combined to drop just one set in singles play to earn the victory. URochester falls back to .500 on the year, seeing its record sit at 3-3 after the opening few weekends of the season.

Starting off the match, the Saints posted wins and first and third doubles to clinch the points, with the number two doubles match being the closest, finishing with a 6-4 score in favor of the Saints. That second doubles pair was Natalie Debowski and Sanjana Karnam for UR and Elisa Iuri and Ariane Karera for SLU.

Afterwards in singles play, the Saints continued their strong play, going up 2-0 with a win at number one from Angelica Aksdal-Jansen against Lilly Caldwell. Aksdal-Jansen, ranked regionally #13 in the Northeast, won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

A similar win from Molly Jespersen against Katie Yang at number two, 6-4, 6-0, pulled the Saints up 3-0 and within one point of clinching the overall match.

That clinching win came from number four singles player Yvette Karera against Debowski. That match was the lone contest that went to three sets, with Debowski winning the opening set 6-3, before Karera rallied with 6-3 and 6-1 wins to seal the victory.

Hailey Kornbluth battled hard at third singles against Iuri, falling 7-6 (5) and 7-5 in a long two-set match.

Closing out the match, both SLU fifth and sixth singles players, Eleanor McDermed and A. Karera won by identical scores, 7-5 and 6-1. McDermed topped Lauren Kallas while Karera defeated Karnam to complete the shutout.

The Yellowjackets next match is set for Saturday February 28th against Hamilton College at home.
