Hamilton Bests Women’s Tennis, 6-1

The University of Rochester women's tennis team wrapped up its three-game homestand with a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Hamilton College Continentals on Saturday afternoon inside the Goergen Athletic Center.

Katie Yang scored the Yellowjackets' lone point of the day with a win at No. 1 singles, topping Hamilton's Hannah Walpole, 7-5, 0-6, 6-3. Rochester also got a win at No. 2 doubles, as Sanjana Karnam and Jasmin Toor defeated Muhan Cui and Grace Qian, 6-0, in the first doubles match of the afternoon.

While Karnam and Toor's win at No. 2 doubles gave URochester an early advantage in doubles play, Mona Farah and Samantha Rainero topped Lauren Kallas and Hailey Kornbluth at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, to even things up, before Priyanka Challapalli and Walpole secured the doubles point for the Continentals with a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles over Lilly Caldwell and Yang.

Things moved quickly into singles play, where Rainero topped Kornbluth at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, to put Hamilton up 2-0, while Challapalli made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4, win at No. 2 singles over Caldwell.

Then, after Yang got the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard, Farah dispatched Esther Wang at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, setting Hamilton up to clinch, leading 4-1.

At No. 4 singles, Toor battled Qian, dropping the first game, 6-3, before topping Qian in the second-match tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4), but Qian would take the final game, 6-3, to take the match and clinch the win for the Contentials, now leading 5-1.

Cui and Karnam would then wrap things up at No. 6 singles, splitting the first two games, 6-4, 2-6, before Cui took the final set, 12-10, to finish off the 6-1 Hamilton victory.

Hamilton picks up its first victory of the year, moving to 1-0 with the win, while Rochester drops to 3-4 with the loss.

The Yellowjackets will be back in action on Saturday, March 7, when they begin play in Hilton Head, SC, as part of their spring break trip against West Liberty University at 8:30 a.m.
