OBERLIN, OH – The University of Rochester men's tennis team wrapped up its weekend in Ohio with a 5-2 loss against the Oberlin College Yeomen on Sunday afternoon at the Hunsinger Courts.
Kavin Shukla and
Rahul Ravi earned the Yellowjackets' lone wins on the afternoon, scoring wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Shukla topped Oberlin's Shawn Lisann at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, to put URochester on the scoreboard, while Ravi's win at No. 3 singles over Enrique Morgan, 6-4, 6-3, leveled the score at two-all.
Oberlin opened the scoring with a doubles sweep to secure the doubles point, as Lisann and Sebastien Naginski topped Ravi and
Alan Wang at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, while Margain and Cameron Weiss edged
Ethan Samora and
Tony Xu at No. 1 doubles, 7-5.
Max Brose and Oliver Knijnenburg finished off the doubles sweep for the Yeomen with another 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles, topping
Josh Chu and Shukla, and would quickly make it 2-0 with Weiss' 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Xu.
After the Yellowjackets evened the match at 2-2, though, the Yeomen would win the next three points, with wins at No. 5 and 2 singles to clinch the victory.
Brose defeated
Joseph Xia at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-1, setting Oberlin up for a clinch at either No. 2 or No. 6 singles. And while
Andy Liu took the first game from Dash Smith, 7-5, Smith battled back to take the next two, 6-3, 7-5, to win the match and secure the victory for Oberlin.
Wang and Naginski would then wrap things up at No. 6 singles, with Wang winning the tiebreak in the first game, 7-6 (9-7), and Naginski winning it in the second game, 7-6 (7-2), before Naginski finished things off in the third set, 10-4.
With the win, Oberlin moves to 3-2 on the year, while the Yellowjackets drop to 5-2 with the loss.
The Yellowjackets next open a three-game homestand, beginning on Saturday, Feb. 21, with a home contest against Ithaca College at 10:30 a.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
