Women’s Tennis Sweeps Nazareth in Season Opener

The University of Rochester women's tennis team got its season started with a 7-0 sweep of the Nazareth University Golden Flyers on Friday afternoon inside the Georgen Athletic Center.

The Yellowjackets quickly secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Lauren Kallas and Neha Dania made quick work of Nazareth's Isabella Iannitti and Paige Masrouri in the third doubles match, 6-0, putting Rochester in pole position to earn the doubles point. Sanjana Karnam and Jasmin Toor then clinched the point with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Victoria Cioni and Anna Spencer.

At No. 1 doubles, Lilly Caldwell and Katie Yang finished off with the doubles point with another 6-1 win, this one over McKenna Ellis and Catherine Zak, and the Yellowjackets kept on rolling as things moved into singles play.

Toor earned Rochester's first singles point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Cioni, while Yang made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ellis in the second singles match.

Hailey Kornbluth then clinched the win, putting URochester up 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Spencer at No. 3 singles, while Natalie Debowski kept things rolling, topping Masrouri at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Zak took the first set over Caldwell, 7-6, at No. 1 singles, winning the tiebreak, 7-3, but Caldwell bounced back to take the second set, 6-0, and then took the third, 10-5.

Then at No. 6 singles, Esther Wang finished off the sweep, defeating Iannitti, 6-1, 7-5.

With the win, the 'Jackets move to 1-0 on the year, while the Golden Flyers drop to 8-6.

Rochester will look to keep things rolling when they host RIT on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10:00 a.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
