URochester Wins Back-and-Forth Match vs. Allegheny

MEADVILLE, PA – First-year Esther Wang secured a straight-set victory at fifth singles, lifting the University of Rochester women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over host Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at the David V. Wise Center.

Wang's victory was a 7-5, 6-3 triumph against Anabel Bachman to break the 3-all team score in the match, helping the Yellowjackets improve to 6-5 on the season. Allegheny's loss drops the Gators to 14-5 on the year.

To start things off, the 'Jackets secured the team doubles point with wins at first doubles and third doubles. The number three team of Neha Dania and Lilly Caldwell raced out to a 6-1 win for the first match win. After the Gators took a 6-4 win at second doubles, UR's Sanjana Karnam and Jasmin Toor paired for a 7-5 win at first doubles to put the 'Jackets up 1-0 in the team match.

With play moving to singles, Allegheny leveled the overall match quickly with Gabrielle Bassette posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katie Yang at the top spot in the order.

The Gators edged in front following Emiliia Grydnieva's straight set win against Hailey Kornbluth at second singles. Grydnieva won 6-2, 6-4.

Toor got the Yellowjackets first singles point at fourth singles, evening the overall match back up, defeating Adriana Navarro 6-3, 6-1.

In the next match to finish at sixth singles, Lauren Kallas blanked Grace Musser 6-0, 6-0 to move URochester back in front 3-2.

While Kallas' win was wrapping up, Allegheny's Giada Palmieri was battling Caldwell at third singles, with that match being the lone singles contest to go to three sets. Palmieri ended up with the win, posting scores of 6-2, 4-6 and 6-2, continuing the back-and-forth nature of the overall match.

With the score tied at 3-3, the Wang-Bachman match would decide it, with the 'Jacket first-year sending the visitors home happy, earning the win.

URochester's next match is set for Saturday, March 28 at home against NYU. That match will serve as senior day for the Yellowjackets.
