PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester baseball fell to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 9-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Towers Field as Ben Yerina twirled a complete-game shutout on the mound for Brockport.
Yerina (1-2) allowed just five hits and six total baserunners to the Yellowjackets over nine shutout innings to earn the win, needing just 93 pitches to work through Rochester's lineup.
James Nelson got the start for the Yellowjackets and worked a 1-2-3 top of the first, but the Golden Eagles would get on the scoreboard an inning later. After Michael Norton led off the inning with a wind-aided double, Nelson retired the next two batters as he looked to strand Norton on second.
However, after getting ahead of James Dixon, 1-2, Dixon looped a single to right to score Norton and give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Brockport would then make it 2-0 with another RBI single in the top of the third, and then tacked on three more in the fourth, chasing Nelson following back-to-back RBI hits by Dixon and Matthew Coon.
Trailing 4-0, Josh Indek's RBI single made it 5-0 before
Theo Beckley worked out of the inning. But after Yerina worked around a two-out double by
Jake Bentivenga in the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles got back on the scoreboard.
Norton's triple to right center and Evan Brock's sacrifice fly made it a 7-0 ballgame, while Yerina needed just four pitches to work through the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth,
Christopher Trucano worked around a pair of baserunners to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard, and then pitched another scoreless frame in the seventh, getting a trio of groundouts.
But Yerina continued to keep the Yellowjackets bats at bay, getting
Nathan Carpenter-Holmes to ground out to short after singles by
Benjamin Garber and
Tristan Datta put runners on first and second with two outs.
The Golden Eagles would tack on two more in the top of the ninth before Yerina finished off the shutout, getting Bentivenga to line out in a double play to erase a one-out single by Garber, and give the Golden Eagles a 9-0 victory.
Nelson (2-1) took the loss for URochester, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out two over 3.1 innings pitched. Trucano pitched a pair of scoreless frames in relief, allowing two hits and striking out one.
At the plate, Garber went 2-for-4 to lead the 'Jackets, while Norton went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, walk, three runs scored and an RBI to lead the way for Brockport.
Rochester will look to bounce back when it hosts Keuka College on Wednesday, March 25, at Towers Field. First pitch is scheduled for approximately 6:30 p.m.
