The University of Rochester men's tennis team earned five points during singles play and picked up a 5-2 victory over #33 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.
Â
URochester improves to 5-8 on the season with the victory, while the Engineers drop to 2-9. The Yellowjackets win against RPI is the first for a URochester squad since a 5-4 victory back in 2019.
Â
Rensselaer was able to swipe the double point on Sunday, despite playing the match with just five players, forcing a default at the third doubles position. At one, Tasmay Shah and Filix Puyplat topped
Ethan Samora and
Aiden Swartz 6-1.
Â
The deciding doubles match was at second doubles, with RPI's Gustave Viennet and Aidan Atri posting a 7-5 win against
Andy Liu and
Alan Wang, putting the Engineers up 1-0 overall with the team doubles point secured.
Â
Moving to singles, the sixth position was an automatic point for Samora and the Yellowjackets, with no RPI player holding down that spot in the lineup.
Â
The next point was earned by Wang at fourth singles against Atri. The 'Jacket sophomore won 6-4, 6-3 to pull the home squad in front in the overall match.
Â
That lead was short lived though, as Liu fell to Shah at first singles, 6-4, 6-1, with the team score evening back up.
Â
URochester finished with a flurry though, securing the final three points of the match, winning in three sets in two of them to secure the match win.
Â
Kavin Shukla pulled the Yellowjackets ahead with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 win at three against Puyplat, before
Rahul Ravi posting the clinching point at second singles against Viennet. The UR senior won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 to give the 'Jackets the win.
Â
The final match was another three-set affair between Swartz and Debarshi Sen at number five. Swartz won 6-2 in the opening set, before falling 7-6 in a tie break in set two. The UR first-year rebounded in the super-breaker third set, winning 10-4 to post the 5-2 overall match win.
Â
Rochester's next match is set for Wednesday afternoon, with the Yellowjackets hosting Hobart College at 4 pm.
