‘Jacket Men Win Second Straight, Defeat Hobart 5-2

The University of Rochester men's tennis team picked up its second straight win over an upstate New York opponent on Wednesday evening, topping Hobart College 5-2 at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Rochester's win is the first over the Statesmen since 2016, snapping an 8-match losing streak to Hobart. The victory pushes UR to 6-8 overall on the season, while the Statesmen drop to 7-5 in dual matches.

Sophomore Andy Liu was a double-winner for the Yellowjackets, winning at third doubles and first singles for the victors.

The match overall was a marathon, lasting well over four hours in total. Three of the six matches went to three sets, with several sets also featuring tiebreaks.

Hobart secured the doubles point winning the matches at first and second doubles. The team of Liu and Surya Rajamani got things started strong for URochester, winning 6-1 at third doubles, but the Statesmen top two duos earned 6-2 and 6-3 wins to put Hobart up 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Rochester quickly turned things in its favor in singles play though, earning straight set wins from Rahul Ravi at number two and Liu at number one for the 2-1 lead.

Ravi topped Aidan Staunton 6-3, 6-4, while Liu upended Nick Fischer 6-4, 7-5.

At four, URochester's Alan Wang rallied for a thrilling win over Achilleas Kousaridis to make it three straight points for the Yellowjackets. Kousaridis won the opening set 6-3 and was up 6-5 in the second set before Wang earned a clutch game forcing a tiebreak.

The 'Jacket sophomore ended up winning a tight tiebreak 8-6 to force a third set. In the third, Wang won 6-2, putting the Yellowjackets up 3-1 on the scoreboard.

Hobart got some momentum back with a win at third singles from Michael Georgelis against Kavin Shukla. That match was a reversal of the match at number four, with Shukla winning the first set 7-5 before Georgelis responded with 7-6 (7-3) and 6-0 wins to snag the point.

Needing just one match to clinch the overall victory, the Yellowjackets got that from Aiden Swartz in the fifth singles slot against Everett Reid. Swartz was a straight-set winner, posting scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to give URochester the win.

Closing out the match, Ethan Samora won a three-set affair against Tejus Ranadive by a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 score to reach the final 5-2 margin in favor of the Yellowjackets.

Wednesday's match was the home finale for Rochester in the 2025-26 season. UR has two more road matches during the regular season, starting with an April 11th match at Brandeis, before heading to the annual UAA Championships later in the month.
