The University of Rochester women's tennis team dropped its second straight match to a ranked foe on Sunday, falling 7-0 to visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Goergen Athletic Center.
URochester's loss drops the 'Jackets to 6-7 overall on the season, while #36 RPI improves to 6-5 in dual matches.
The match started with three doubles matches going in favor of the Engineers, although two matches proved to be close, going to RPI by 6-4 scores. The third doubles match was a 6-2 score, giving Rensselaer the early edge.
Afterwards, the first and second doubles matches to decide the overall doubles point also turned in favor of the visitors. At one, the nationally-ranked team of Nicole Ridenour and Anushka Jaiswal won 6-4 over
Jasmin Toor and
Sanjana Karnam.
To complete the doubles sweep, the number two team of Victoria Sarabosing and Kaaviya Kannan also won by a 6-4 score versus
Lauren Kallas and
Neha Dania.
In singles, RPI ended up posting five wins by straight sets, with only UR's Karnam at fifth singles winning a set.
The number four match between regionally-ranked Kannan and Kallas finished first, with Kannan posting a 6-2, 6-1 win. At three, Sarabosing followed with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over
Hailey Kornbluth to put the Engineers within one point of clinching the match.
Up next, Ridenour topped
Katie Yang at number one for the fourth overall point, winning 6-1, 6-2. Gauri Muliyil kept things rolling for RPI with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Toor at number two.
Rounding out the match, Karnam was able to top Juliette Ceas 6-1 in the opening set, before the Engineers number five player rallied for a three-set win, posting 6-2 and 10-7 wins to keep the shutout intact.
The final contest of the day was Neha Saraswatula against Dania at sixth singles. In that one, the RPI player won 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), to reach the final score of 7-0 in favor of the Engineers.
Rochester remains home for its next match, schedule for Thursday afternoon against William Smith College, with that contest starting at 4 pm.
