Women’s Tennis Wins Tight Matchup vs. Hardin-Simmons

HILTON HEAD, SC – The University of Rochester women's tennis made it two wins in two matches on Saturday during the teams Spring Break trip, defeating Hardin-Simmons University 4-3 at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.

The win follows up a 6-1 win to open the trip against West Liberty University earlier in the day and pushes URochester's record to 5-4 on the season.

Three players were double-winners in the HSU match, with Lauren Kallas, Hailey Kornbluth and Jasmin Toor winning in both singles and doubles. Esther Wang was the other match winner, pairing with Kornbluth at third doubles for the victory that proved big in the overall team match.

The doubles point was the deciding factor in the overall match, as both teams secured three singles points.

In doubles, URochester earned the first two points at number two and number three to secure the early 1-0 lead. Kallas and Toor combined for a 6-3 victory at two, while Wang and Kornbluth won 6-4 at three. In the third match on court, the number one doubles team from Hardin Simmons (2-6) edged Lilly Caldwell and Katie Yang 7-6 (7-4).

The singles matches were very evenly matched, with four of the six contests going to three sets.

Hardin-Simmons won the first singles match to level the score at 1-1, following Sydney Tomlin's 6-3, 6-2 win at number one against Yang.

At three, HSU's Addyson Tylaska was a 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 10-7 winner over Caldwell to edge in front, but that lead was short lived because Kornbluth won in three sets against Breanna Gordon at number two. The 'Jacket first-year won 7-6 (9-7), 4-6 and 11-9 to knot the overall match up once again.

The final three matches on court ended up deciding the winner, with Toor and Kallas winning at four and six, respectively to clinch it for UR.

Toor won in three against Emma Curiel, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, while Kallas was a straight-set winner versus Halle Smith, impressing in a 6-0, 6-3 match. Toor's win was the clinching point.

The last match on court went to the Cowgirls, as Taylor Levy topped Wang 1-6, 6-1 and 10-7.

URochester's women wrap up their 3-match Spring Break slate on Sunday morning, taking on Lake Forest College at 8:30 am.
