HILTON HEAD, SC – The University of Rochester men's tennis team fell in a closely-matched contest to the Randolph College Wildcats, 4-3, on Monday morning in Hilton Head, SC.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, March 8, the match was suspended due to inclement weather and resumed and finalized beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9.
Rochester led 1-0 when the match was suspended, having secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
Ethan Samora and
Aiden Swartz put URochester in pole position in doubles play with a 6-2 win over Carlos Haupt and Vincenzo Marchese at No. 2 doubles, while
Andy Liu and
Alan Wang topped Jacob Martin and Andreas Mulner, 6-4, to earn the doubles point.
At No. 3 doubles, Jason Duval and Aksel Tinnes-Rimehau topped
Surya Rajamani and
Liam Rieger, 7-5, and singles play got started before the match was suspended.
Once things resumed on Monday morning, the Wildcats quickly tied things up at No. 1 singles and won the next two singles matches to take 3-1 match lead.
Martin defeated Liu at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, while Mulner topped Swartz at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Marchese made it 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Xu, before
Joseph Xia and Wang got Rochester back on the scoreboard.
Xia earned the Yellowjackets' second point with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Duval, while Wang topped Tinnes-Rimehau at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3, to even the match at 3-all.
However, Randolph would edge the 'Jackets with a victory at No. 6 singles, as Haupt topped
Leo Umansky at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3, to secure the victory for the Wildcats.
With the loss, Rochester drops to 4-5 on the year, while Randolph moves to 5-1.
The Yellowjackets will wrap up their three matches in Hilton Head, SC, later this evening on Monday, March 9, squaring off with Shenandoah at 5 p.m.
