PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Trailing by as many as six goals in the second half, and four in the fourth quarter, the University of Rochester lacrosse team mounted a huge comeback, rallying for a 14-13 overtime win over Liberty League rival Skidmore College on Friday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
Senior
Alyssa Gorny scored the game-winning goal 1:23 into overtime to power the Yellowjackets to their fourth straight win, moving the team to 10-4 overall on the season and 6-2 in Liberty League play.
URochester reaches ten wins in a single-season for just the third time in program history, joining the 1999 and 2003 teams with double-digit victories. The six Liberty League wins is also a team record, breaking the previous mark of five that was set four times.
In addition to her game-winner, Gorny continued to etch her name atop the URochester lacrosse record book, securing nine draw controls to break the all-time record in that category. Her total now sits at 202 for her career, breaking the previous all-time best of 198, set by Grace Crochiere back in 2024.
Friday's game saw the Yellowjackets stumble a bit during the first half, thanks to some physical defensive play by the Thoroughbreds (7-8, 3-5 Liberty League). UR committed 15 turnovers over the opening 30 minutes, allowing Skidmore to grab an 8-4 lead at halftime.
Gorny started the scoring, three minutes in, but Skidmore rattled off four straight goals to go up 4-1 after ten minutes of play.
Lorelei King found the net to stop the Skidmore run, but Julia Cafasso notched her second of the period for Skidmore to complete the opening quarter goals, putting the visitors up 5-2.
In the second,
Allison Weiden and Gorny each scored to pull the Yellowjackets within one, but Skidmore closed the half with three straight goals, heading to intermission up four.
Gorny set the UR career draw controls record.
The Skidmore momentum continued into the third quarter, with the Thoroughbreds scoring three of the first four goals to extend the lead to 11-5 with just over a third of the regulation game still remaining.
Over the final 25 minutes of the game, URochester combined to outscore Skidmore 9-2, thanks in part to some timely scoring, more pressure defensively and some key saves by
Isla Ablin in goal.
Rose Bunting scored an unassisted goal with 2:18 left in the third quarter to start the comeback. After scoring the first-year seemed to a fire in the Yellowjackets that would last the rest of the game.
The ensuing draw control was won by Gorny and led to a
Jenna Kessler free position goal a minute and a half later, cutting the deficit to four heading into the fourth.
On Skidmore's first attempt with the ball in the fourth,
Jenna Ufberg swatted the ball away from a Skidmore attacker, leading to the Yellowjackets offensive possession which added to the goal-scoring run. At the other end, Gorny tallied her third of the game to get URochester back within three, down 11-8.
Ablin followed by coming up with a big save on a free position shot by Lily Hudner, giving the 'Jackets the ball back to potentially inch closer on the scoreboard.
URochester saw a free position attempt of its own saved by Tatum Walsh in the Skidmore net, but Weiden made a big defensive stand in the midfield for UR, forcing a turnover to get the Yellowjackets the ball right back.
This time UR converted, with
Anna Rogers scoring her 45th of the season to make in an 11-9 game with 10:25 left on the clock.
The huge run forced Skidmore to call a timeout, but that did not thwart the Yellowjacket momentum, as UR's Gorny grabbed her record-breaking draw control to keep possession.
After two shots were fired high, Weiden found the net with the play clock winding down, firing a shot low and just inside the left post.
Gorny added another draw control to keep possession and the run going, with the senior finding Weiden on a cut to the goal for the game-tying tally with 8:31 remaining.
Maddie Bunting got the next draw control for the Yellowjackets and Gorny made it three goals in a minute and 20-second span to pull Rochester in front 12-11.
Skidmore finally got back in the scoring column a couple minutes later with Allison Brewer finding the net to tie the game back up as the clock dipped under five minutes.
Weiden netted her fourth of the game on a terrific individual effort to regain the lead one minute later for the Yellowjackets. The sophomore spun around a defender along the left side, raced towards the crease, juked her shot high and went low, pushing URochester back up by one, 13-12 with 3:41 left.
Skidmore refused to quit though, notching the equalizer with 1:27 remaining, when Hudner connected on a goal following a pass from Phoebe Ross.
With time winding down in regulation, the Yellowjacket picked up the last draw control of the period and quickly called timeout to set up their offense. UR's play resulted in a Rogers hit clanging off the post with 12 seconds left, and after
Tessa Little scooped up the ground ball, the 'Jackets were unable to attempt another shot, sending the game to OT.
After the restart, URochester's R. Bunting secured the overtime draw control, giving her team a chance to win it without allowing Skidmore to possess the ball.
The Yellowjackets did just that, patiently running their offense over the length of the possession clock, resulting in Gorny's game-winner, in which she spun around a defender and then beat three others to find the back of the net.
Gorny finished with a game-high eight points, scoring five times while adding three assists. She added 4 ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win. Weiden's four goals were a career-high, and she finished with two caused turnovers as well.
Rogers, R. Bunting, Kessler,
Kassi Boehl and King finished off the scoring for the Yellowjackets, each tallying once.
In goal, Ablin finished with nine saves, while her counterpart, Walsh, had 11 stops for Skidmore.
Rochester is right back in action on Saturday afternoon in its regular-season home finale against RPI at 2 pm.
