PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester women's tennis team dropped its penultimate match of the regular season, falling to the 44th-ranked Vassar College Brewers, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Lyman Tennis Center.
Despite Maddie Kirby and Ananya Krishnan needing a tie-break at No. 2 doubles against
Neha Dania and
Lauren Kallas, the Brewers would earn the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Iris Li and Erin McCusker topped
Sanjana Karnam and
Jasmin Toor at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, while Sieun Lee and Sara Lippin defeated
Lilly Caldwell and
Esther Wang at No. 3 doubles, 6-3.
At No. 2 doubles, Dania and Kallas battled with Kirby and Krishnan, but the Brewers would take the match, 7-6 (7-4), to sweep doubles play.
Dania would give URochester its first point to begin singles play though, topping Lippin at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3, to knot the match up at 1-all.
Vassar would take the next two points with wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, but the 'Jackets would go away quietly, earning another win at No. 5 singles.
Krishnan put the Brewers up 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over Toor, while Liya Pomfret made it 3-1 Vassar with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 defeat of Kallas at No. 4 singles.
Then at No. 5 singles, Karnan topped Gwendolyn Gray, 7-5, 6-2, to pull the Yellowjackets within a point, 3-2, but McCuster would clinch the match for the Brewers at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) over
Katie Yang.
Kirby then added another win to wrap things up for Vassar at No. 3 singles, finishing off the match with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory over
Hailey Kornbluth.
With the win, Vassar moves to 10-5 on the year, while the 'Jackets drop to 7-9 with the loss.
URochester will wrap up its regular-season slate on Saturday, April 18 with a matchup against SUNY Geneseo at 2:00 p.m., inside the Goergen Athletic Center, or weather-permitting, outside on the Lyman Tennis Center courts.
