POTSDAM, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team notched a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon against Clarkson University, scoring runs late in both contests to earn the Liberty League West Division series victory at Snell Field.
Rochester secured a 13-10 win in 10 innings during game one and made it two straight wins with a 6-4 triumph in game two. The pair of victories move URochester to 12-16 overall on the season at 5-10 in the Liberty League. Clarkson drops to 16-12 overall and 7-8 in the conference.
Game 1: Rochester 13, Clarkson 10 (10 inn.)
The high-scoring affair featured fireworks in the late innings, as Clarkson scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
URochester responded though in the top of the tenth, plating four runs to regain the lead, eventually holding on for a three-run win after surrendering another score in the bottom of the inning.
The Golden Knights got the scoring started with a James Chagnon RBI single in the second and Aidan Kuefner sacrifice fly, putting the hosts up 2-0.
UR leveled the score in the fifth on an RBI groundout from
Grady Davis and RBI single from
Benjamin Garber.
In the next inning, the Yellowjackets tacked on two more runs, both unearned thanks to a pair of Golden Knights errors. After
Logan Mathias led off with a single,
Luke Blozy reached on a throwing error. Another error on a George Farley bunt allowed pinch-runner
Jake Goldberg to score.
Nathan Carpenter-Holmes added a sacrifice fly to put UR up 4-2.
The seventh inning saw the Yellowjackets add two more to their total, again capitalizing on a pair of Clarkson errors. This time,
Teddy Monahan scored on a wild pitch and Blozy reached on a third baseman's error to score
Ryan Huckabone.
Clarkson chipped away with a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a CJ Cartier single to left, but the 'Jackets answered right back with three in the top of the eighth to move the score to 9-3. Monahan provided a 2-run single to left, with Huckabone adding an RBI double in the three-run frame.
Up 9-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, Clarkson sent ten batters to the plate, scoring six runs on five hits to force extras. Joe Figliolino hit a 2-run home run in the inning, while Nolan Merrow cleared the bases with a 3-run double with two outs, tying the game at 9-all.
In the tenth, the Yellowjackets batted around as well, getting four runs to regain the lead. Davis singled to leadoff the inning and
Carlos Barajas walked. After a fielders choice did not record an out,
Tristan Datta laid down a bunt allowing Davis to score, giving UR the lead.
Jake Bentivenga then drew a bases loaded walk to add another run, with Blozy following by doing the same thing. George Farley the IV grounded out to the pitcher, allowing another runner to cross home, moving the score to 13-9.
The bottom of the tenth saw Cartier rip and RBI double to left, but he was stranded at second as
James Nelson locked down the final few outs to secure the win.
At the plate, Garber, Huckabone, Mathias and Davis each had two base knocks for UR. Monhan was 1-for-4 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI and 2 walks, also adding a stolen base. Barajas also drew a pair of walks and scored twice, while Davis also crossed home plate two times and added an RBI.
On the mound,
Zach Herzog started and tossed six strong innings for the 'Jackets. The junior allowed 7 hits and 2 unearned runs, walking 2 and striking out 3.
Theo Beckley went two innings of relief and allowed one run, while
Sam Loeb and
Jake Del Vecchio yielded the runs in the ninth. Nelson got the final four outs of the game and earned the win.
Game 2: Rochester 6, Clarkson 4
Game two was a back-and-forth battle as the teams traded runs in the first inning and fourth inning. UR edged ahead in the fifth, but saw Clarkson tie things up in the eighth before plating a pair in the top of the ninth to win.
In the first inning, Farley IV led off with an infield single. After moving up on a ground out, Monahan laced a single to right center, scoring his first-year teammate to give the Yellowjackets the early 1-0 advantage.
The lead did not last long though, as Clarkson scored three batters into their half of the first, with Merrow scoring on a James Mason fielders choice grounder.
Rochester retook the lead in the fourth with two runs. A hit batter and single put two runners on to start things. After a botched sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position.
Will Webster recorded an RBI groundout and then Carpenter-Holmes legged out an infield single to score another run, moving the score to 3-1.
Clarkson's Cartier added an RBI double to his solid day at the plate in the bottom of the inning, getting one of those runs right back, making it 3-2 Rochester after four.
Two more Golden Knights errors, the hosts ended with ten across the two games, allowed another URochester run to score in the fifth, pushing the score to 4-2 Yellowjackets at the midpoint of the contest.
The score remained a 2-run difference until the bottom of the eighth when Clarkson scored twice to even things up. Two singles and a fielders choice put two runners on. An error then allowed one run to score and a second later came in on a bases loaded walk.
Nelson, who gave up the game-tying walk, escaped a bigger mess though in relief of
Kevin Carpenter-Holmes, getting a fly out to strand the bases loaded full of Golden Knights.
UR answered back once again in the ninth. After a flyout, Farley IV walked and Barajas singled to left. A double-steal was successful and Farley IV then scampered home on a throwing error by the Clarkson catcher, putting the Yellowjackets back on top.
Up next, Monahan grounded to third but the ball was thrown away for another Clarkson error, pushing the Yellowjackets in front by two.
In the ninth, Nelson pitched around a 2-out walk to preserve the lead and earn his second win of the day and team-leading fifth of the season. He went 1.1 inning and did not allow a hit or run in game two.
Derek Llanes started for the Yellowjackets and tossed four innings. He surrendered 5 hits and 2 runs with no walks and 1 strikeout.
Christopher Trucano was strong in his two relief innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while K. Carpenter-Holmes was tagged for 3 hits, 2 unearned runs and 1 walk over his 1.2 innings.
Offensively, Farley finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Monahan went 2-for-5 with an RBI and steal while Goldberg added a 2-for-3 day with a stolen base. UR swiped five bags in game two, most in a single game this season.
The Yellowjackets next play a mid-week doubleheader at Hamilton College on Tuesday afternoon starting at 2 pm. URochester closes out its Liberty League regular season slate next weekend, playing a home-and-home series with RIT on Friday and Saturday.
