ITHACA, NY – It was another solid late season competition for the University of Rochester women's track and field team, competing at the Ithaca College In-Between Meet on Saturday afternoon.
This meet serves as a bridge from last weeks conference championship weekend into the final two meets of the season for URochester, with the All-Atlantic Region Championships and NCAA Division III Championships taking place over the next two weeks.
On Saturday, the Yellowjackets had four event wins, nine AARTFC qualifying marks and had three new personal-best's.
The four wins came from first-year
Lauren Murphy, juniors
Madison Vargas and
Nora Chen, and the 4x400 meter relay of Murphy, Chen,
Raquella Casserino and
Lizzie Merrill.
During the relay, which capped action on the track for the women, UR's quartet finished with a season-best time of 3:48.59, staying put at #19 on the current ranking within Division III in that event.
Chen's win came in the 200 meters, with the junior co-captain running a time of 24.78 seconds, a regional qualifier and a new personal-best.
In the jumps, Murphy place first in the long jump with a 5.50 meter leap, hitting the regional standard, while the rookie also ended runner-up in the triple jump at 11.26 meters. Joining Murphy in the top-8 during the long jump were junior
Anna Johnson (5.33 meters, third) and senior
Ashleigh Barrett (5.16 meters, seventh).
During the throwing events, Vargas and
Aimee Oszer were UR's competitors on the day. Vargas won the discus with a mark of 40.64 meters, while Oszer was second at 39.58 meters, with both hitting the AARTFC standard.
Oszer added a runner-up result in the shot put, with a best toss of 12.79 meters, while Vargas chipped in a third place finish during the hammer throw, posting a mark of 49.04 meters. Those results earned each athlete another regional berth.
Elsewhere on the track, URochester had two entrants in both the 100 meters and 400 meters. During the 100 meters, both Casserino and Merrill hit new personal-best's. Casserino was second in the prelims in 12.43 seconds, qualifying for regionals, while Merrill sprinted to a 12.66-second time.
In the 400 meters, senior
Rita Sciortino ended second at 1:00.01, while teammate
Emily Dill finished in eighth place, crossing the line in 1:02.13.
Katie Atkins competed in the pole vault and had a top height of 3.21 meters, ranking 15th in the field.
