CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester tennis team secured a number of wins in singles play on the opening day of competition at the 2026 St. Lawrence Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon.
 
Rochester's best results came in the 'B' singles bracket, with both Josh Chu and Alan Wang reaching the semifinals at the conclusion of the days action.
 
Chu won 8-4 over Hobart's Kato Tsang and then followed that up with an 8-5 victory against Arhan Gupta of Union in the quarterfinals. His next matchup will be against another Garnet Charger, in Alex Mazza, during Sunday's semifinals.
 
Wang was the #3 seed in the 'B' singles draw and posted a pair of 8-2 wins to cruise into the semifinals. His opening round opponent was Daniel Saxe of Union, with the quarterfinal opponent being Ithaca's Shivam Udani. In the semi's Wang is matched up with Tejus Ranadive of Hobart.
 
Both Ethan Samora and A.J. Balsamo earned first round wins in the 'B' singles draw as well before bowing out in the second round. Samora's win came against Justin Son of host St. Lawrence by an 8-7 (5) score. Balsamo won 8-5 in his first round versus Alain Uzelac of Union.
 
Rochester's Andy Liu is also still alive in the main draw of the 'A' singles flight. Liu won his two matches against Luis Crespo of Ithaca and Dylan Ortiz of Hobart. The UR player who was seeded fourth in the draw, defeated Crespo 8-5 and won 8-4 against Ortiz. In the semifinals, he is facing Hobart's Michael Georgelis who upended the top seeded player from Ithaca.
 
Kaiser Zhao and Ziwen Ju also competed for UR in the 'A' singles bracket, but neither could get past the second round. Zhao won his first match against Solen Bellemare by an 8-5 score, but was upended by Georgelis in round two. Ju lost in a tough tiebreaker to Simon Philip of Union by an 8-7 (4) score during the opening round.
 
Rochester also had four doubles teams enter into the 'A' and 'B' draws, but none of the four were able to win their opening matches of the competition. Zhao and Samora are still alive in the 'A' doubles consolation bracket after an 8-3 win over Tsang and Daniel Gallagher from Hobart.
 
Action continues at the tournament starting at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
