WILLIAMSPORT, PA –
Sydney Holmes scored twice and the University of Rochester women's soccer team raced away with four goals in the second half to beat Lycoming College 5-1 on Saturday at UPMC Field.
Rochester improved to 4-0 on the season, with the offense shining, as the team has recorded three or more goals in each contest. On Saturday, the Yellowjackets outshot Lycoming 23-3 and held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Holmes put Rochester ahead in the 11th minute, taking a pass from
Gabi Chioccola and scoring for a 1-0 lead. The one-timer at the goal mouth came after Chioccola created space in the box with a razzle-dazzle move around a defender.
Overall in the opening half, the Yellowjackets peppered 13 total shots at the goal, compared to none for Lycoming, but only held a one-goal advantage.
Rochester quickly extended its lead after the break, with
Natalie Santangelo scoring 1:32 into the second period.
The play started with Holmes taking a corner kick, and playing the ball short out to Chioccola along the right wing. A wide-open Chioccola sent the ball into the box where Santangelo flipped it past the Warriors keeper from the edge of the six to double the lead.
Holmes added her second goal in the 60th minute off a pass from
Eileen Harvey, notching a sliding score from 12 yards off the line along the left win.
URochester's
Delia McMullen scored 1:35 later to put the Yellowjackets ahead 4-0 off a middle of the box one-timer. Santangelo slotted a perfect pass in to her teammate from the right side for the assist.
Lycoming finally got on the board in the 67th minute when Ella Magee converted a penalty kick. A foul in the box by a Yellowjacket defender awarded the Warriors the penalty opportunity.
Haidi Schoenberger restored Rochester's four-goal cushion in the 83rd minute, scoring off an assist from
Ava Schmidt.
Lycoming goalkeeper Leah Elliott made six saves as the Warriors fell to 1-3. UR's
Eleni McGuire played all ninety minutes for Rochester and earned the win, but did not make a save.
The next URochester game is set for Wednesday afternoon at SUNY Cortland.
