ITHACA, NY – Led by a commanding performance but the Pair (2-) of senior Co-captain Julia Tricomi and sophomore Erin Seitzer the University of Rochester women's rowing team had a strong performance at the Ithaca Cayuga Sprints on Sunday afternoon along the Cayuga Inlet.
 
The racing came against league rivals Ithaca, and RIT, as well as entries from Cornell's rowing club, and Cascadilla BC. 
 
The event was held in two parts; a morning 2000-meter time trial, and an afternoon 1000-meter sprint where boats are matched with the boat closest to you in time. 
 
Tricomi and Seitzer had a strong time trial, finishing not only five seconds clear of the next closest pair (from RIT), but with a faster time than all the women's doubles as well, normally a faster boat class.
 
In the afternoon they were equally strong and their combined times from both gave them gold in the women's pair, ranking first of seven crews. 
 
Sophomores Sophia Fietkiewicz and Quinn Seawright started the day with a strong time trial, finishing first of six entries. In the sprint they were edged out by the top boat from Ithaca, settling for second of the doubles in combined time. 
 
Sophomore Katelyn Wilmarth finished second in the lightweight single. Also, second in their event were first year Olivia Fioravanti and senior Devyn LaRue. 
 
First-year Ashley Maddocks and junior Sabrina Butori Valdivia competed strongly earning 19th place overall of 29 crews.
 
"I was very pleased with how the team handled the challenge of the day," said Director of Rowing Ethan Curran. "They showed they are ready to compete. Their performances sent a strong message to some key league rivals that the bar will be very high this year in the Liberty League."
 
Next the team will compete at home in the Head of the Genesee Regatta on October 10. Come give a cheer!
