ROCHESTER, NY- Twelve individuals, keys to the success, longevity and reputation of the University of Rochester and its athletic department will be inducted as the 2011-12 Hall of Fame class.
Induction ceremonies will be held on Friday, October 21st, in the Multi-Activity room in the Goergen Athletic Center as part of Meliora (Homecoming) Weekend. The Hall of Fame inductees will be introduced at halftime of Saturday's football game vs. Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Hall of Fame held its first induction ceremony in 1992.
The Hall of Fame class for 2011-12 includes George Angle (Friend of Rowing), David Bence ´81 (Basketball), Walt Campbell ´81 (Football/Baseball), Monica Farren Warnsman ´92 (Swimming), Mark Kivitz ´73 (Tennis), Rishad Pandole ´96 (Squash), Jim Lennox ´51 (Golf/Basketball), John Luther ´82 (Cross Country/Track and Field), Richard Miller ´66 (Football), Tom Murray ´82 (Football/Baseball), George Schmergel ´65 (Soccer) and Elizabeth “Libbie” Tobin ´94 (Soccer/Basketball).
Since leaving the River Campus, the inductees have found success in many fields including banking, investment, education, law and business administration. They all are truly an asset to have in the University of Rochester Hall of Fame.
George Angle (Friend of Rowing)
Held various executive positions at the University of Rochester since 1963…Retired as senior executive of Public Affairs…Was initial mentor and fundraiser for original University of Rochester Rowing program in 1981…Organized many fundraisers and donated various equipment to the UR Crew team throughout his years of involvement with the program…Called the “father of UR Crew” and was co-founder along with U.S. National Team Coach Andy Metcalf of the Head of The Genesee Regatta (originally the Bausch & Lomb Regatta, then Stonehurst Capital Regatta), which began in 1989…Was inducted into the Rochester Rowing Hall of Fame in 1999, along with his wife Vee.
David Bence '81 (Basketball)
At UR:
Career Statistics: 92 games, 729 points, 295 rebounds, 332 assists
Started all four of his years on the basketball team…Two year varsity captain…Won MVP honors of the Cornell Pepsi Cola Tournament in 1978…Was selected CT Athlete of the Week…Received the Alcott Neary Award for MVP of the 1978-79 season, while leading the team in both scoring and assists…Team leader on the then winningest team in school history achieving 20 victories in the 1980-81 season…Was a two-time Democrat and Chronicle Small School All-Star team member…Two time Lincoln First Bank 1st team All-Tournament player...Upon graduation, ranked 8th in career assists (332) and 9th in free throw percentage for a season (81.8%).
Post Graduate:
Achieved a successful career in the banking industry in Wisconsin and then Massachusetts…Was Director of Housing in the New Bedford area, 3rd largest municipality in Massachusetts…Turned to a new career as a golf pro and went on to become Head Golf Pro at Omni Tucson National Golf Course…Became Director of Sales and Marketing for Embassy Suites Hotels, Hilton Worldwide Corporation…Received that company's “Spirit of Embassy Award” for excellence and outstanding contributions to the company in 2010…Has volunteered his time for a number of organizations including youth golf programs, military family programs, and the Special Olympics.
Walt Campbell '60 (Football/Baseball)
At UR:
Was a three year starter on the football team, playing fullback, linebacker and kicker…Played for legendary UR Elmer Burnham…Scored all 20 points and ran for 128 of the teams 149 rushing yards in a 20-0 shutout of Kings Point in 1958…Member of the undefeated (8-0) football team of 1958, only the second unbeaten season in school history…Currently ranks 10th on U of R all-time scoring list, with 150 points scored…Currently is tied for 10th with 19 rushing touchdowns and is ranked 9th in career PAT attempts with 57…Was starting catcher for the baseball team…Member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity at the University.
Monica Farren Warnsman '92 (Swimming)
At UR:
Earned 11 All-America awards, in three relays and eight individual events…Was a member of three straight teams which finished in the NCAA Div. III top 25 …Earned 25 top-3 finishes at the UAA Swimming Championships from 1989-1992…Finalist for the Rochester Press Radio Club's College Sportswoman of the Year in 1991…Was a UR Sylvia Fabricant Award winner in 1992…Earned a certificate of excellence from the College Swim Coaches of America…At the time of her graduation, had achieved eight school records and one UAA record…Currently listed in the top 10 all-time in 12 events at the University of Rochester.
Post Graduate:
Used her degree in Health and Society in working at Strong Memorial Hospital while also teaching club swimming…In 1996, earned Masters Degree in Education from the Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development…Moved to Virginia and Massachusetts to teach special needs children with learning differences…Currently resides in Dublin, Ohio with her husband Dale ('92 UR graduate) and her three children, Emma, age 10, Daniel, 7, and Kyle, 4…Volunteers at her children's elementary school and also serves as a Girl Scout leader and is involved with their youth sporting activities as well.
Mark Kivitz '73 (Tennis)
At UR:
In 1970-71, Mark achieved a perfect 10-0 record at positions #1 and #2 singles during his sophomore year…Beat players that year from high powered schools like Cornell, Colgate and Syracuse…Won several collegiate events including the NCAA Atlantic Coast Regional's individual title while helping UR win the team title…Won an open tennis championship at the Season's Racquet Club while still at UR, beating some of the region's best tennis players…Continues to donate financial assistance to the UR tennis program nearly every year.
Rishad Pandole '96 (Squash)
At UR:
Was a first team All-American in his final three years at the U of R…Achieved an individual national ranking as high as #4 in the intercollegiate association…Victories included wins over top players from schools like Princeton, Penn and Brown…Former UR Head Coach Peter Lyman considers Rishad as the best University of Rochester Squash player ever during his time coaching.
Jim Lennox '51 (Golf/Basketball)
At UR:
Competed on the successful 8-2 golf team from 1949 where Jim then participated in the National Intercollegiate Championships out in Iowa…Compiled a 6-3 individual record in the 1950 season for the Yellowjackets…He was a three time UR Golf team captain (1949-51)… Two year starter on the hardwood…Co-captain of the basketball team in his senior year… Was one of five players who played in every game of the 1948-49 season.
John Luther '82 (Cross Country/Track and Field)
At UR:
Earned a 7th place finish in the College Division at the 1980 ICAAAA Cross Country Championships…Was also a member of the All-ICAAAA first team that year…Finished 5th at the 1980 NYSCT&F Cross Country Championships…Was 3rd at the 1980 NCAA Regional Qualifier, earning a spot at nationals…Finished 72nd overall in the 1980 NCAA Cross Country Championships, helping UR finish 10th overall as a team…Earned a qualifying time as a member of the Distance Medley Relay team during the 1981 indoor track season…Was the 1981 champion in the 1500 meters (3:56.50) at the NYSCT&F Indoor Championships…Placed 3rd in two events at the 1981 NYSCT&F Outdoor Championships, the 10,000 meters (30:56) and the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:37)…Earned NCAA berths in both events…Finished 5th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 1981 NCAA Championships, earning All-American honors and setting a then UR school record in the event.
Richard Miller '66 (Football)
At UR:
Three year starter on both offensive and defensive line for the UR football program…Was co-captain of the team his senior year…Two time ECAC outstanding player of the week…Earned an All-East Honorable Mention in 1965…Selected the University of Rochester Most Valuable Lineman for the 1964 and 1965 seasons…Was key in the running game for Little All-America running back Ted Fink during his time at the U of R…Head Coach Don Smith said credited Miller as being one of the finest leaders he had play for him…Was a member of the “Keidaens” group which was a select group of UR students and administration that served as a university advisory panel…Was president of his fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi.
Post Graduate:
Upon graduation with his Management degree, he earned an MBA from Cornell and became a certified public accountant…Was an adjunct professor for Economics at Marymount Manhattan College…Became a Senior Manager in the New York Management Advisory Services Division at Price Waterhouse & Co…Was on the Board of Directors at the New York Futures Exchange…Served as an investment advisor at Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley…Eventually formed his own company (Richard Miller & Co.) which operated as a market maker and broker on the floor of The Commodity Exchange, Inc. and the New York Futures Exchange…Recently moved back to Rochester where he joined the Rochester Chorus of the Eastman School of Music…Continually supports UR athletic teams and attends many games and other university sponsored events.
Tom Murray '82 (Football/Baseball)
At UR:
Was a two time All-American for UR football, his junior and senior seasons…Three year starter at linebacker…Earned Most Improved honor sophomore season…Team Outstanding Defensive Player junior year…Was named Most Outstanding Player and earned the Contributed Most to UR Football honors his senior year…Led the team in total tackles during final two season at UR…Two time ECAC Football Player of the Week…Three year starter on the Baseball team…Led the team in batting average in both freshman and sophomore seasons (.395 and then .435)…Earned the Lyle “Spike” Garnish Award for being a UR outstanding student-athlete…Earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Post Graduate:
Worked as operations, manufacturing, and finance managers for companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Avery Office Products, Oracle, Price Waterhouse Cooper and IBM (where he currently works as a senior managing consultant)…Continually supports UR athletics by being a west coast alumni contact, athletic program donor and by traveling on a yearly basis to attend homecoming/reunion weekends…Volunteer experiences include offering his time to the United Way, Ventura County Science Fair, Youth Athletic programs in California and the American Cancer Society…He and his wife Diana currently reside in Moorpark, California and have three children.
George Schmergel '65 (Soccer)
At UR:
Three year varsity letterman for soccer…Named to the All-New York Soccer Team in 1964…Team captain in his senior year…At the time of his graduation, held the single season scoring record with 16 goals…Was a two time UR Athlete of the Week.
Post Graduate:
Began working as a lawyer in 1970 and still currently is working with a firm in Rochester…Has worked with various areas in the field, including bankruptcy and immigration…Is active in many volunteer opportunities including grass roots politics, coaching youth soccer, various political campaigns and assisting with the PAC-TAC (Police and Citizens Together Against Crime) program.
Elizabeth “Libbie” Tobin '94 (Soccer/Basketball)
At UR:
Led the soccer team to four straight NCAA appearances, reaching the title game in 1991…Earned first team All-UAA all four seasons as a defender…Earned All-NYSWCAA her final three years at UR…NSCAA/Umbro All-American 3rd team junior year and 2nd team senior year…UAA Player of the Year and then Co-Player of the Year in 1992 and then 1993…Team won UAA Championship during all four years…Helped anchor a defense that compiled 47 shutouts over the four year span…Captained the team during her final season…Two time first team All-East Region player…Played three years and started two of them on the basketball team…Named to All-Tournament Teams for Chase Scholarship Tournament, UR/Holiday In Airport Tournament, ECAC Upstate NY Championship and Chuck Resler Invitational…1st team All-UAA and Rochester Area College Athletics during senior season…Earned Basketball Gazette/USA Today Division III National Player of the Week honor…Led the UAA in assists per game during conference play, two years in a row…Currently 21st on the career scoring list with 705 points…Finished career in top 10 in free throw percentage (3rd), assists (6th) and steals (10th)…Earned the Garnish and Merle Spurrier Awards…Received Bachelor of Arts degree from UR in 1994.

Acquired Masters Degree in Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1999…Became dually certified in teaching Social Studies and Business Administration at Roberts Wesleyan College in 2002…Worked as head women's soccer coach at West Virginia Wesleyan (Div. II) and Robert Morris College (Div. I) from 1995-2001…Worked as a teacher at Honeoye Falls-Lima H.S. from 2002-04…Currently works at Wilson Magnet H.S. in Rochester…She volunteered during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and currently offers her support in coaching Penfield youth soccer and as Varsity head coach at Penfield H.S.
