Loveless, Johnson Get Career Highs at UAAs

ATLANTA - Senior setter Liz Loveless and sophomore hitter Susan Johnson posted career highs in a five-game win over Brandeis in the last of the pool play matches at the UAA Championships here.

The career performances came in a 30-21, 30-25, 28-30, 29-31, 16-14 victory over Brandeis.

Loveless registered 68 assists, one shy of the single match record of 69 set by Lauren Viscardi. She also had 19 digs, four aces, and one block.

Johnson posted a career high 38 kills and hit a sparkling .471. She added 27 digs, one aces, and two blocks.

Haley Massa had 15 kills, Kristin Vogt added 12, and Kate Czarniak had 10. Grace Kraay had 30 digs. Massa had 19 digs while Czarniak had a dozen. Vogt and Czarniak had four blocks apiece.

This victory puts the Yellowjackets against Case Western Reserve at 9 am Saturday in the consolation bracket. The other consolation match pairs Brandeis against Chicago. Consolation winners play for fifth place at 2 pm. Consolation losers finish tied for seventh place.

Rochester finished third in Pool A (behind 3-0 Washington and 2-1 NYU) because the Yellowjackets lost, 3-0, to both schools earlier on Friday. Washington won, 30-10, 30-25, 30-22. The Bears are the defending NCAA Division III Champions.

NYU, which reached the NCAA Division III Final last year and won the New York State championship this season, defeated Rochester, 30-26, 30-22, 30-24.

Against Washington, Vogt and Massa had seven kills apiece. Johnson had 19 digs. Loveless had 20 assists and 14 digs.

In the NYU match, Johnson had nine kills. Vogt had seven kills. Loveless recorded 21 assists. Kraay had 12 digs, and Samantha Carr had 10 digs.

Rochester is 22-12 heading into the consolation round.
