WALTHAM, MA - The women's volleyball team defeated Case Western Reserve, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon to finish fifth at the UAA Championships.
Rochester earned the right to play for fifth place by defeating Chicago, 3-0, in a 9 am match Saturday. Rochester defeated the Maroons, 30-21, 30-19, 30-27.
Sam Carr had 38 assists, seven kills, and 19 digs against the Spartans. Susan Johnson had 18 kills and 20 digs. Kaitlyn Gorczynski had 24 digs. Haley Massa had six kills and seven blocks.
Jessica Sorrentino had four kills and four blocks. Kate Czarniak had eight kills and two blocks, and Andrea Wagonseller had seven kills and 10 digs.
In the first round on Friday, the Yellowjackets lost to Emory (23-30, 15-30, 12-30) and NYU (24-30, 20-30, 13-30), then bounced back to defeat host Brandeis, 3-1 (30-28, 30-25, 27-30, 30-27). The third place finish in Group B put the Yellowjackets against Chicago (fourth in Group A) on Saturday morning.
Statistical leaders were minimal against nationally ranked foes NYU and Emory. Against NYU, Johnson and Jen Rasmussen had nine digs each. Sorrentino had five kills. Carr had 12 assists and Czarniak had three blocks.
Against Emory, Carr had 17 assists. Johnson had six kills and 10 digs. Sorrentino had 13 digs.
In the win over Brandeis, Wagonseller had nine kills and 20 digs. Johnson had 26 kills and 31 digs. Czarniak had 16 kills. Sorrentino and Massa had four blocks apiece. Carr had 49 assists and 18 digs.
Wagonseller had eight kills and 17 digs versus the Maroons. Sorrentino had six kills and 12 digs. Czarniak had 10 kills and four blocks. Johnson had 11 kills, 22 digs, and three aces. Carr had 30 assists and 15 digs.
Rochester is 24-14.
