Women Fifth at UAAs on Day One

ATLANTA - The women's swimming and diving team stood in fifth place after the first day of the University Atheltic Association Swimming and Diving Championships being hosted am Emory University here.

Rochester totaled 134 points from six events. The Yellowjackets were just 11 points out of fourth place (NYU, 145) and only 14 points adrift of third place (Washington, 148).

Kari Joyce was the top individual finisher among the women's swimmers and Patricia McHale was the high Yellowjacket scorer on the diving board.

Joyce finished seventh in the 50 freestyle (0:24.91). She swam the anchor leg on the 200 free relay which was sixth (1:43.15) with Kathryn Monti, Karen Gromer, and Jill Endres. Joyce swam the leadoff leg on the 400 medley relay which finished fourth in 4:11.39 (Gromer, Monti, Michele Gruen).

McHale finished seventh overall on the one meter board with a score of 324.15. Nancy Tremblay was eighth with a 317.75.

Rochester's other individual swimmers included Gruen (ninth, 5:10.82) and Danielle Scherry (13th, 5:16.24) in the 500 freestyle.
