The University of Rochester won its inaugural Liberty League Swimming and Diving Championship in 2009-2010 with a great deal of depth. The Yellowjackets used the same formula to claim their second consecutive Liberty title in the 2010-11 season.
Two sessions on Saturday produced two individual winning performances – both from senior Val Atwood – as well as a winning relay. Rochester's skill throughout the lineup saw six runnerup finishers, three women finish third, four finish fourth, two swim to a fifth place clocking, and one finish sixth.
“Over the course of the weekend, we had close to 90% season best times, and 54 lifetime personal best times,” said head coach Pete Thompson. “We placed seven women in the top 16 in the 1650 and six in the top 16 of the men's 400 IM.”
Those scoring points were vital as Rochester outpointed host Union to take the Liberty title in Union's pool. The Yellowjackets finished with 865.5 points. Union totaled 811.5 and RPI was third with 518.
Atwood won the 100 backstroke (:59.69) and the 200 backstroke (2:09.37). Karen Meess was second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.34) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:13.96).
Corinne Lampe was second in the 400 IM (4:46.78) and the 1,650 freestyle (18;12.39). She was fifth in the 200 fly (2:14.63). Farrell Cooke produced two runnerup finishes and one third place clocking. Cooke was second in the 200 free (1:59.69) and the 200 backstroke (2:10.35). She was third in the 1,650 freestyle (18:28.06) to Lampe's runnerup clocking.
Jennifer Chung was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.31) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.81). Bridget Festa was fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.18) and sixth in the 100 (1:12.25). Jessica Indyk was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.98).
Stephanie Bolin was third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.66) and fourth in the 200 fly (2:12.75). Meg Lawless and Dayna Jacob swam 4-5 in the 100 freestyle (Lawless :55.96, Jacob :56.05).
On the three meter diving board, Megan Braun was second (351.00), Constance Iribarne was third (303.55), Sara Spielman fifth (299.20), and Becca Baer seventh (292.35).
“Our women divers placed exceptionally well,” Thompson said.
“Overall, I am very pleased by our team's collective approach to the championship meet, our overall performances, and particularly with our presence on deck throughout the weekend. It was certainly memorable for all of us.”
The women's 200 medley relay won in 1:52.04. The relay swimmers were Atwood, Indyk, Lampe, and Jacob. The 400 free relay was second (Atwood, Lampe, Lawless, Jacob), timed in 3:43.98.
