UR Tops #5 Carnegie on Thesing OT Goal

PITTSBURGH - Jack Thesing scored two goals - one in the second sudden death overtime - as Rochester defeated fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 3-2, on Friday evening.

It was the third consecutive weekend match against a Top 10 team and the Yellowjackets claimed their first victory in the University Athletic Association this season with the triumph.

Thesing scored at 107:44 to snap a 2-2 deadlock and boost Rochester's record to 7-2-2 overall, 1-0-2 in the UAA. Rochester goes to Emory University on Sunday. Carnegie is 8-2-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the UAA.

Rochester got three big plays in the first half as the Yellowjackets jumped in front, 2-0. Nick Pastore and Thesing scored goals for the Yellowjackets and Scott Garfing came up with a mammoth save on a penalty kick.

Pastore opened the scoring just 3:06 into the match. Alex Swanger swung the ball in front and Pastore was there to knock it into an open net. At 20:17, Thesing made it 2-0. He won a 50-50 confrontation with the Carnegie goalkeeper and scored his sixth goal of the season.

The Tartans had a great chance to get on the scoreboard 11 minutes later. Rochester was whistled for a foul in the area and CMU was awarded a penalty kick. Garfing saved the shot by Ben Bryant to keep Rochester in front.

Carnegie battled back in the second half. Just 44 seconds after halftime, Matt Sarrett put a ball into the range of Mike Farraco and he powered it home to pull CMU within 2-1.

The Tartans were awarded their second penalty kick of the night with just under 20 minutes to play. Max Tassano took this one and drove it past Garfing to tie the score at the 70:28 mark.

Swanger was the catalyst and Thesing the finisher on the OT gamewinner. Swanger's cross got past Carnegie goalkeeper Christopher Madden and Thesing slid to knock it into the open net.

Carnegie outshot Rochester, 19-12, and earned nine corner kicks to three for the Yellowjackets. Garfing produced seven saves. Madden had three for CMU.
