UR Shines Late in 5-0 Victory

ROCHESTER, NY- The University of Rochester scored five second half goals, three in the last 10 minutes to topple Marywood University 5-0 in the first round of the UR Flower City Classic at Fauver Stadium Friday night.

Five different goal scorers found the back of the net for the Yellowjackets (1-0) who tallied their highest scoring output since beating Lycoming 5-2 on September 25, 2010.

Junior Max Fan, sophomores Shane Dobles and Jack Thesing along with freshmen Tyler Buck and Jeff Fafinski all scored for UR.  For Thesing and the two freshmen, it was their first collegiate goal.

Marywood (0-1) got off to a quick start with Daniel Hull firing a hard shot from the left wing right at UR goalie Scott Garfing in the second minute.  Rochester was able to answer with sophomore Nick Pastore earning a number of solid scoring chances in front of the Marywood net.

Max Eberhardt then provided another great chance for UR, but Marywood's Ryan Gunderman cleared the ball away from the goal line for a team save.  The score at halftime ended with the teams tied at 0-0.

Fan got the Yellowjackets on the board in the 48th minute, after Pastore was able to generate another scoring chance by dribbling in from the left wing.  Less than three minutes later, Marywood tried to answer with a good chance from Ryan Jones, but Garfing was solid and kept the ball out of the net.

Dobles was able to connect and make it 2-0 ten minutes after Fan scored when he was on the receiving end of a great cross from sophomore Jarvis D'Souza.  The pass came in from 25 yards out on the right wing and found the foot of his classmate who had snuck in behind the Pacer defense.

After nearly missing on multiple chances after subbing in the game in the 59th minute, the freshman Buck was able to connect on a wonderful shot in the 81st minute.  The shot was from 25 yards out and just beat Marywood goalie Shane Quinn and trickled in off the right post.

Rochester boosted the lead to 4-0 with a goal from Thesing after Seth Davis-Brown did a great job weaving his way through the Pacer defense to the end line.  He flipped the ball to Thesing who was alone in front and put the score away at 86:47.

With less than a minute remaining, Fafinski broke free and got in on the scoring with a breakaway goal for his first career tally.

In net, Garfing made five saves to earn the shutout while Quinn made three saves for Marywood.

UR will face Fredonia State on Sunday at 3 pm while Marywood takes on St. John Fisher at noon.  Both UR and Fisher lead the classic format with three points each.
