The University of Rochester played #10 ranked Brandeis University in a very evenly matched game Saturday night, with the score coming out even in the end, 1-1 in the University Athletic Association opener for both squads.
Rochester (6-2-1, 0-0-1 UAA) got its goal in the 39th minute when
Max Eberhardt recorded his first score of the year and the lead nearly stood for the remainder of the game. Brandeis (9-0-1, 0-0-1) used its speed though to generate chances with it paying off in the form of the tying goal in the 85th minute from Tyler Savonen.
Brandeis supplied the first good scoring chance of the match when Lee Russo fired a hard point blank shot on net in the 11th minute that was stopped by UR goalie
Scott Garfing. Then at 32:47, teammate Tudo Livadaru spun and turned a hard shot that rattled off the crossbar, keeping the Judges off the board.
Junior
Max Fan of the Yellowjackets had Rochester's first decent scoring opportunity in the half when
Jack Thesing lifted a beautiful touch pass to Fan who got open and put his shot just high of the Brandeis net.
Then at 38:57, Eberhardt recorded his goal to give the 'Jackets the lead. Fan started the play by sending a corner kick to the back post where
Ben Keeton headed the ball right on the net, only to have it saved by Brandeis keeper Blake Minchoff. The rebound however was up for grabs and Eberhardt was in the right place to slide in and score the goal, giving UR the lead 1-0.
In the second half, a stretch of four straight corners helped give UR the chance to grab a two goal lead, but Rochester was unable to break through the Brandeis defense.
The Judges returned the favor shortly after, earning five corners over a three minute stretch in the 56th to 59th minutes. Brandeis was able to generate a couple of shots during that span, but Garfing and the UR defense was there to make the stops. Rochester's backline of
Jakob Seidlitz,
Jake Cargill,
Andrew Roberts and
Andrew Sheridan all were very active in the game, breaking up chances and scoring plays in key situations.
In the 85th minute, the 10th ranked Judges were able to break through and tie the score behind Savonen's fourth goal of the year. He settled a loose ball in front, spun and fired a strike into the right side of the net to even the score and send the contest into overtime.
After the first overtime didn't amount to much in terms of scoring chances, Eberhardt looked for Thesing in front of the net early in OT number two. His pass just missed the sophomore and leading UR goal scorer this season, thwarting the chance at victory.
A minute later Brandeis had its last great opening of the night when Kyle Feather miss-hit a loose ball in front of the UR net. His shot though turned out to be a good one as the looping shot came down and nicked the crossbar, forcing Garfing to punch the ball to safety. Neither team would get on the board and the game would then end in a 1-1 draw.
As stated, the game was very evenly played with the Judges holding a slim lead in shots (17-15) and saves (8-7). UR generated nine shots on net while Brandeis fired eight at Garfing. Brandeis also held a 17-11 advantage in corners.
In the goals, Garfing made seven saves while Minchoff was solid as well stopping eight shots.
Rochester next plays in New York City to take on NYU in its second UAA game of the year next Saturday October 6th.
