Two Singles, One Doubles Alive at ITAs

Day 1 Results

ITHACA, NY- Two singles players and one doubles team is still alive after day one of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships being held at Ithaca College.

Junior Julian Danko highlighted the day as he reached the round of 16 in singles play and also reached the quarterfinals in the doubles competition. Danko defeated Michael Rusk of Hobart in the first round 6-2, 7-5 and then dispatched Union's TJ Moor in round two by a 6-1, 6-3 score. In the third round he will face off against Gabe Steerman of Skidmore College.

In doubles, Danko teammed with senior Boris Borovcanin to reach the quarterfinals. The pair topped Ted Laport and Isaac Lertola of Bard easily in round one, winning 8-0 before beating Billy Buchbinder and Howard Telson of TCNJ in round two 8-4. The duo faces Matt LaBarre and Jarrett Regier of Rensselaer in the quarters on Saturday.

The second singles player to win two matches is sophomore Joshua Jachuck. In round one, Jachuck easily defeated Alfred's Connor Doud 6-4, 6-1. His path got tougher in round two, when he was able to outlast Sidd Thangirala of NYU in three sets, winning 2-6, 6-4, 13-11. His round of 16 opponent is Skidmore's Danny Knight.

In other action on Friday, sophomore Ben Shapiro and freshman Jonny Baker both won their first round match but fell in the round of 32. Shapiro defeated Tyler Williams of Nazareth 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Vassar's Nicholas Litsky 6-0, 7-5. Baker won over Oneonta's Michael Kennelly 6-4, 6-3 and then dropped to TCNJ's Telson 7-5, 6-1.

Singles players to drop their first round match were Borovcanin and sophomore Matt Levine. In doubles, Levine and Shapiro were able to win their first round contest against Morr and Grant Zaccareo of Union 8-4 before losing to a Stevens Tech pair in round two. The third doubles pair from UR to compete was a freshman combo, Alex Hollenberg and Tony Zhao who fell to Pierce Cooper and Mike Stanley of TCNJ 8-6.

Day two play at Ithaca's Glazer Arena and Wheeler Tennis Courts is slated to begin at 8:30 am on Saturday.
