Box ScoreALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – 5th-ranked Washington University defeated the 40th-ranked University of Rochester 8-1 in the opening round of the 2015 University Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship on Friday after Sanlando Park.

Sophomore Jonny Baker was the lone winner for the Yellowjackets who dropped to 8-9 on the season. Washington, the tournament's 2nd seed, improves to 17-4 on the year. Earlier this season, the two teams met in California on spring break with the Bears winning by a 7-2 score.

Baker defeated WU's Jeremy Bush 1-6, 6-2, 10-4 at third singles for the lone Yellowjacket point.

The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead taking all three doubles matches. Bush and Ross Putterman were victorious 8-6 over UR's Ian Baranowski and Aaron Mevorach at #1. Sam Leeman and Julian Danko dropped the #2 doubles match to Kevin Chu and Johnny Wu 8-3 and Baker and Ben Shapiro teamed at #3 doubles but lost 8-1 to Tyler Kratky and Josh Cogan.

In singles, Washington would take all the matches in straight sets except for Bakers win. Baranowski hung tough with John Carswell at #1, but dropped the match 6-4, 6-4. Shapiro lost to Putterman at #2, 6-2, 7-5 while Danko dropped his match at #4, 6-3, 6-3 to Kratky.

Rounding out the match, Mevorach played at #5 and dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Wu while Leeman was beaten by Chu 6-1, 6-1 at #6.

Five of Washington's singles players are nationally ranked individuals while the other, Carswell, is ranked as the #4 player in the central region. Washington as a team is #5 nationally and #1 in the Central region while Rochester is the #40 team nationally and ranked #13 in the Northeast region.

The Bears move on to the UAA semifinals where they will face off against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday while the Yellowjackets will face sixth seeded Brandeis in the consolation round. Saturday's play opens at 9 am with the women's championship rounds while the men's semifinals will start at 2 pm.
