Nine Honored with Induction into Athletic Hall of Fame

Eight former athletes and one coach were inducted into the University of Rochester's Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday evening, October 8. The induction ceremony is part of the Meliora Weekend festivities on campus. Meliora is the University's motto signifying 'ever better'. The ceremony was held in the Leibner-Cooper Room in the Robert Goergen Athletic Center.
           
On a regular basis as student-athletes, the eight former players showcased the highest skill in seven sports: football, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's soccer, men's track & field, women's lacrosse, and women's swimming and diving. The coach was originally hired as an athletic trainer, then named coach of the indoor and outdoor track and field programs. He inaugurated the Rochester cross country program in 1969.
           
The Hall of Fame Class of 2016 includes one Academic All-American, five All-Americans, and one member of an NCAA National Championship Team. Five of the honorees took part in the NCAA Championships– in women's swimming and diving, football, men's cross country and track and field, and men's soccer as athletes, and in men's basketball as a coach.
 
Kareen Kreutziger Coulombe '01                       Hometown: Pawtucket, RI
At UR: Four-year starter in women's lacrosse who earned All-New York State honors every year… Three-time all-conference in Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (forerunner of the Liberty League)… Two-time All-Region honoree by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (1999, 2000)… Rochester's first All-American in women's lacrosse (honored in 2000)… Named to CoSIDA's Academic All-America Team in 1999 and 2000… Selected as UR's Female Scholar-Athlete as a senior and honored as a Garnish Scholar-Athlete. Post-Grad:  Earned a Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the University of Washington in 2007… Pursued a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pathology at Washington, becoming an expert in stem cell biology and heart regeneration research… Since 2014, she has been an Assistant Professor of Engineering and Medical Sciences at Brown University, where her research laboratory focuses on cardiovascular regenerative engineering. Coulombe played with the Seattle Women's Lacrosse Team (2001-2013), coached the University of Washington Women's Lacrosse Club Team (2002-2005) taking them to the National Tournament in 2005, was an umpire for women's and girls' lacrosse (2001-2013), and served on the Washington Women's Lacrosse Umpire Association Board (2006-2012). She presently resides in Pawtucket, Rhode Island with her husband, Jared, and two daughters, Evalyn and Vivian.
 
John Dunnigan '68                                     Hometown: Flemington, NJ
At UR: Fullback,  tight end, and linebacker, starting with 1964 freshman team and three year started with varsity beginning in 1965….  His blocking tandem with tackle Dick Miller helped fullback Ted Fink earn All-America honors. Multiple ECAC Player of the Week honors . Also named All-ECAC at in 1967… Three games of 100+ yards rushing in 1967 (Hamilton, Williams, Union) and 90+ vs. Denison. Post-Grad: Assistant football coach and teacher at Aquinas Institute, later the head football coach and a teacher at Newfane High School… Joined Bausch & Lomb and participated in the introduction of soft contact lenses in the United States… As the president of Pharmacia Inc.'s ophthalmic division, he changed the way cataract surgery was performed…. Now owner and president of Scandinavian Leadership Inc… Married to the former Susan Forsyth '70 with three daughters, Meghan Dunningan, Whitney King, and Brooke Frapwell '96.
 
Barbara Bliss Mahnke '86                                    Hometown: Hickory, NC
At UR: Dynamic swimmer who qualified for the NCAA Championships in four straight years and anchored six different relays to All-America honors… As a senior, she helped Rochester to place 13th out of 63 teams at NCAAs. She qualified for NCAAs in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay, and 400 medley relay. Each relay set a school record… Her 400 medley relay team earned All-America honors in four straight years with a best finish of sixth place nationally… Set several individual records in freestyle and individual medley events. Post-Grad: Moved to Hickory, North Carolina and worked for 22 years at SIECOR/Corning Cable Systems in engineering, sales, and various other management positions… Taught math at a local university, then taught math and physics as a local high school… Married Peter Mahnke in 1991 and they raised four boys… Her hobbies in retirement include quilting, playing the cello, and rescuing dogs.
 
Andrew Milne '91:                                     Hometown: Rochester, NY
At UR: As a transfer from Colgate University, Milne tied the UR record for most field goals made in a game and set the single-season record as a sophomore, owns school records for most field goals in a career , most extra points in a season, and most consecutive games with a field goal… Multiple All-America honors as a placekicker, including the Pizza Hut Division III All-America Team (1987, 1988) and the Associated Press Little All-America Team (1988)… For UR's 1987 NCAA-bound football team, he broke his own record with 12 field goals… Kicked a school record 34 extra points in 1988. That year, he also broke the school record by kicking five field goals in a 29-0 win at Hobart (which included a 50-yarder, a UR mark for distance)… Named ECAC Player of the Week, UAA Player of the Week, and selected to the UAA's Honor Team. Post-Grad: Earned a BA in history in 1991… Has worked as a maintenance manager in the manufacturing field for Universal Studios, Frito Lay, Nestle, and as director of facilities for Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo… Currently, he is a supervisor in the maintenance department for Ortho Clinical Diagnostics in Rochester… Father of Alex and Cailin.
 
Everett J. Phillips:                                       Hometown: Chocowinity, NC
Coaching Background: Joined the University in 1959 as an athletic trainer after serving on Olympic Training Duty with the New York Athletic Club in single and double sculls (rowing). Spent 1956 as an assistant athletics director at the Mount Hermon School, coaching multiple sports… Named Rochester's indoor and outdoor track coach in 1960… Rochester won five New York State track & field championships (1963-68 –  with 2nd place finish in 1964)… He was a doctoral student and assistant track coach at the University of Oregon, 1967-1969. Earned his EdD in 1972… Returned to Rochester and began the first official cross country program in 1969… Served as Chairman of the Dept. of Health, Physical Education, Athletics, and Dance at SUNY Fredonia, 1970-1995.  Head track coach there, 1971-74… Assistant track coach, 1975-94. Teams won 13 indoor and 19 outdoor SUNYAC championships, 22 NY state titles (11 each)… Cross Country Coach at Fredonia, 1971-94 (eight SUNYAC, three NY State titles), finished third at 1983 NCAA Championships… Three years as women's cross country coach at Fredonia… He and his wife, Shirley, have five children between them and three grandchildren.
 
Joseph B. Sebastianelli '85                                   Hometown: Archbald, PA
At UR: Four-year starter on defense with the football team… Selected to the St. Lawrence University All-Opponent Team for his combination of skill, integrity, and commitment to wholesome competition… Played all three positions on the D-line as a senior and earned the team's Iron Man Award… Selected as a Garnish Scholar-Athlete and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity… Graduated with a degree in political science. Post-Grad: Graduated cum laude from the University of Dayton School of Law… From 1988-89, worked as an associate attorney at the law firm of Lenahan & Dempsey… Named assistant counsel to the State Workers' Insurance Fund in 1989 and remained through 1994 when he was appointed to his current position as Workers' Compensation Judge for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania… He and his wife, Stephanie, have a daughter named Clare.
 
Adrian N. Smalls '88                                   Hometown: West Henrietta, NY
At UR: A four-year letter winner for men's basketball, he was the co-captain of the 1987-88 Chase Scholarship Tournament championship team… Named the tourney's MVP and set the tournament's field goal percentage record… Earned All-Association honors from the UAA in 1987-88… At the time of his graduation, he was ranked in numerous statistical categories at Rochester: third in career assists (445), 15th in career points scored (938), fourth in assists in a season (138), third in career games played (100), first in consecutive games played (95), most steals in a game (seven). He also held two three-point shooting records. Post-Grad: Earned an MS in public administration from the College at Brockport… Served as adjunct professor at Roberts Wesleyan College… Joined the Rochester Police Department  after graduation and retired from RPD in 2008. He became a full-time faculty member of the Monroe Community College Department of Law and Criminal Justice… He served as a volunteer assistant coach with the UR men's basketball team from 1991-2015… he is a member of the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester… He and his wife, Morgan, have two daughters, Avah and Adriene, and a son, Kerel.
 
Timothy Voloshen '96, '00                                   Hometown: Nazareth, PA
At UR: A three-time All-American, a three-time UAA Champion, a three-time NYSCT&FA Champion, and named to the UAA 25th anniversary team for cross country… He was a member of the 1991 Cross Country National Championship team, and teams that placed second (1992), seventh (1993), and third (1994) in subsequent years… Rochester won the NYSCT&FA and UAA Cross Country Championship titles in each of his four years… In track, he was the UAA Champion in the 3000m Steeplechase in 1994, 1995, and 1996… In 1994, he set the UAA Steeplechase record and again in 1995… He was the NYSCT&FA Outdoor Track Champion in the 3000m Steeplechase record in 1995 and 1996, and in the 10,000m in 1996. Post-Grad: After graduating with a BS in Cell Biology, he went on to earn a Master's degree in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry… Currently, he is the Director of Global Clinical Immunology Business Operations at Sanofi Pasteur, Inc. and has contributed to the licensure of pediatric and adult vaccines around the world… Voloshen and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of Christian, Caitlin, and Emily… He continues to run and enjoys obstacle course racing, marathons/ultra-marathons, and running with his family.
 
Jason A. Walker '96                                                Hometown: Marietta, GA
At UR: Four-year starter for men's soccer earning All-UAA honors each year (First Team in 1994 and 1995)… Named to UAA's 25th Anniversary Men's Soccer Team… All-New York State honoree in 1993… He was the UAA Player of the Year in 1995 and named to National Soccer Coaches of America All-American team… Helped UR win one UAA title, one ECAC title, and make two NCAA Division III playoff appearances… Shares the school record for assists in a game and holds the record for career assists. Post-Grad: Awarded a degree in anthropology from UR… Served as an assistant coach for Genesee Community College women's team in 1996 that reached the NJCAA Championships and won Coaching Staff of the Year honors… Also played professionally for two years – first with the Rochester Ragin' Rhinos in their inaugural season, then with the Atlanta Ruckus before sustaining a career-ending injury…  Started a career in Human Resources… For the last nine years, he has served Habitat for Humanity International as an Assistant Director of its Global Talent Acquisition Team… He and his wife, Mikalee, are the parents of daughter Scarlett, and the owners of two dogs, Bowie and Ringo.
