A career year for senior
Nancy Bansbach of the Rochester field hockey team has culminated with one of the best possible outcomes, an All-American honor.
Â
Bansbach was selected to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-American team on Wednesday, being selected to the 16-person 1st Team for the 2018 season.
Â
The Fayetteville, New York native becomes the 13th Rochester field hockey player to earn All-American honors and is just the fourth in program history to earn 1st Team accolades. She joins Tara Lamberti (2015), Michelle Relin (2015) and Sayaka Abe (2016) in the exclusive group to earn NFHCA 1st Team All-American status. In all, the Yellowjackets have now had 15 All-American honors in team history.
Â
2018 was a breakout campaign for Bansbach, as the senior earned 1st Team All-Region honors and was selected as the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year and 1st Team All-Conference. She scored 21 goals, one shy of the UR single-season record and added five assists for a grand total of 47 points, also second most in a season at Rochester. Additionally, Bansbach recorded at least one point in 16 of 22 games, finding the cage in 14 of those games.
Â
The senior also had six game-winning goals, converted both her penalty stroke attempts and helped lead the Yellowjackets to their best season in program history. Rochester as a team ended 19-3, setting a new school records for wins in a season and best start to the year after beginning the season on a 14-game winning streak.
Â
UR also ended in the NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinals, reaching the NCAA playoffs for the fourth straight season, something never been done prior to this season in field hockey team history.
Â
For her career, Bansbach ends with 34 goals and 11 assists for 79 total points. She ranks tied for 5th in career games played at Rochester, appearing in 86 matches. Additionally, she is tied for 7th in game-winning goals (10), 9th in goals and tied for 9th in points.
Â
2018 is the seventh season in the last eight in which Rochester has ended with a field hockey All-American, with five of those years having multiple AA awards. Last season,
Courtney Dunham, a fellow senior on this year's squad, was selected as a 2nd Team All-American.
