RIT Defeats UR on Senior Night

Visiting RIT spoiled senior night on Wednesday evening for the University of Rochester volleyball team, with the Tigers earning a 3-1 victory over the Yellowjackets at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
 
The win keeps RIT's hot streak alive, as the Tigers (14-8) have won eight matches in a row.  UR drops to 8-16 with the loss.
 
Rochester started strong, taking the first set 25-19, but the Tigers polished off 25-15 and 25-19 set wins to grab the lead.  UR was ahead 22-20 in the final set, but RIT rattled off the final five points of the set to clinch the match.
 
UR was led by junior Allie DeRubertis who had 13 kills and hit .500 on the night.  She added a team best 15 digs.  Beth Ghyzel, one of five seniors honored prior to the match on senior night, finished with 7 kills, 6 digs, 3 blocks and 3 aces.

McHugh had six kills and three blocks.

Megan McHugh added six kills and three blocks, while Tamera Shaw and Kaylin Williams each had four kills.  Isabelle Miranda had 33 assists and Sara Apanavicius added 12 digs.
 
RIT was paced by Katie Hobler who had 17 kills and nine digs.  Taylor Higgins recorded a double-double for the Tigers with 15 kills and 11 digs, also notching three aces.  Two other Tigers had three aces on the night, with Maria Simonetti and Kiana Walker contributing to RIT's 14 aces on the night.
 
For the match, RIT finished with a .286 to .188 hitting percentage advantage.  The Tigers had 54 kills to UR's 40.  RIT also led 52 to 47 in digs, but the Yellowjackets seven blocks topped RIT's four.
 
Ghyzel, Apanavicius and McHugh, along with Kate Korslund and graduate student Emma Dowdy were all honored pregame for their contributions over the last four seasons to the Yellowjacket volleyball program.
 
UR returns to action on Sunday for the final UAA Round Robin event of the regular season.  The Yellowjackets play at Case Western Reserve against the host Spartans (12 pm) and the University of Chicago (10 am).
