HENRIETTA, NY – The University of Rochester volleyball team fended off a hard charging Montclair State University squad on Friday night, earning a 3-2 win at the New York Regional Challenge being hosted this weekend by RIT.
Rochester picks up its 10th win of the season, moving its record to 10-18 on the year, while Montclair State falls to 20-7 on the season.
UR started out strong, bursting to a 25-11 win in set one. The Yellowjackets pushed out to a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 win in the second. MSU rallied, winning the third and fourth games by 25-19 scores, but Rochester settled in during the tiebreaking fifth set, posting a 15-9 win to seal the match.
UR had four players with eight or more kills.
Tamera Shaw led the way with 14 kills, while
Beth Ghyzel and
Allie DeRubertis had nine each.
Sonia McGaffigan swatted eight while hitting .438 on the night.
Shaw finished with 14 kills.
UR had a whopping 14 aces in the match, five from
Renae Lapins, three from Ghyzel and two from
Sara Apanavicius, with four others chipping in one. Lapins handed out 20 assists and had 10 digs, while
Isabelle Miranda had 18 assists.
Apanavicius recorded 19 digs, while DeRubertis had 18. Both Ghyzel and
Megan Hauer had 14 apiece. Along the net, UR had 10 blocks as well, compared to just two for MSU.
Megan McHugh had four assisted, the same total as Ghyzel and McGaffigan who each had one solo and three assisted. Shaw also added three blocks.
For Montclair State, Leah Higgins and Carly Waterman had 12 kills each while Schyler White smacked 10. Megan O'Rourke was the leading passer with 38 assists while four players, Waterman (21), Maddie Valko (16), O'Rourke (13) and Katelyn Monaghan (11) recorded double-digit digs. Caitlin Aarts had three aces for the Redhawks.
Rochester completes play at the tournament and will conclude its regular season schedule on Saturday against Fredonia in a rematch from an earlier contest this season. On October 12th, UR fell 3-0 against the Blue Devils in Fredonia.
