ITHACA, N.Y.- After losing both games of a doubleheader yesterday to RIT, the University of Rochester baseball team headed to Ithaca College for a nonconference showdown with the Bombers. Rochester would come away with a 15-2 win.
Â
History was not on the Yellowjackets side coming into the afternoon. UR was just 14-52 all time against Ithaca, and lost each of their last four match ups. But that was certainly not the case this afternoon. First-year
Jacob Matzat opened up the scoring in the top of the first on a single to right to bring
Steve Pickering home.
Â
The Yellowjackets continued to add runs throughout the game, scoring in seven out of nine innings. Rochester would add two more in the top of the second, as
Brian McKinsey drove
Zach Miraz in on a single through the left side. McKinsey would later score on a double by
Aiden Finch double the left field line.
Â
In the top of the third, after a Miraz single allowed
Harper Sy to cross home safely,
Jake Hertz reached on a throwing error and Miraz would come across to make it 5-0. Hertz would later score on a passed ball to make it 6-0 through three innings.
Â
Rochester would add two more in the top of the fourth before Ithaca got on the board in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-1.
Â
After a Matzat single drove in Pickering,
David Rieth singled to short. After a throwing error on the play, Matzat was able to advance to third and Finch crossed home safely. Matzat later scored on a single by Sy to make it 11-1 through five.
Â
The Yellowjackets would score two in the sixth and two in the ninth for a final score of 15-2.
Â
Spencer Rojahn, who made his first career start, went 2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair of Bombers for his first career win. Him, along with
Hank Powers,
Kevin Ho, and
Nathan Slenska combined for 11 punchouts.
Â
Finch had a career-high five hits, going 5-for-5 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a double. Reith had three hits in six trips to the plate and scored a pair of runs. Miraz had three hits, two RBIs, and a pair of doubles. Matzat and McKinsey combined for 5 hits, 4 RBIs, and 4 runs scored.
Â
UR returns home this weekend for a four game series against Clarkson University.
