Rochester Finishes 2-2 in Red Dragon Invitational at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Rochester's results through the first three matches of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon women's volleyball invitational showed the Yellowjackets dueling in two tiebreakers.
 
UR opened play with a 3-0 victory over Marywood University (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) on Friday afternoon. Later that evening, the Yellowjackets lost to Stockton University when the Ospreys battled back from a 2-0 hole in sets to win, 3-2 (25-20, 25-16, 17-25, 17-25, 15-17).
 
In Saturday's first match, it was Rochester's turn to rally – this time against Western New England College. WNEC won the first set, 25-20. Rochester evened it with a 25-18 triumph in set two. WNEC went back in front, 2-1, after seizing a 25-23 win in the third set. The Yellowjackets won, 25-17, in the fourth set to force the fifth set tiebreaker. UR took that one, 15-13.
 
The Yellowjackets finished 2-2 in the tournament after a 3-0 loss to unbeaten St. Lawrence (24-26, 21-25, 21-25). The Saints wound up tying for the tournament title with Baldwin Wallace. B-W won the crown on a tiebreaker – fewest points allowed over the course of the event.
 
Allie DeRubertis
DeRubertis had 17 kills vs. Stockton

There were a number of significant statistical performances in the Stockton match. Allie DeRubertis produced 17 kills and 22 digs. Tamera Shaw had 14 kills and eight blocks – four solo, four block assists. Beth Ghyzel registered nine kills as did Kate Korslund. Ghyzel had 24 digs and five assists. Korslund dug nine balls.
 
Isabelle Miranda posted 43 assists and eight digs. Renae Lapins had seven assists and three service aces.
 
On Saturday morning, Shaw tacked on 10 kills to her tournament total. Megan McHugh had seven kills. Kiara Carrasquilla and DeRubertis had six kills each. Ghyzel added five. The assist leaders were Miranda with 13, Lapins 10, Ghyzel nine. Ghyzel and Shaw had four aces each. Apanavicius had 21 digs. Carrasquilla contributed 11 and Ghyzel got to seven balls.
 
Shaw produced one block solo and five block assists. Ghyzel had one solo and four assists, and McHugh had a solo plus three block assists.
 
Against the Saints, Korslund was the attack leader with nine kills. She added eight digs. Shaw had six kills and five blocks (one solo). Ghyzel contributed six kills, 10 assists, and seven digs while Miranda had 11 assists and 11 digs. Shaw was Rochester's representative on the All-Tournament Team.

Seventeen players saw action in the tournament opener vs. Marywood. Sonia McGaffigan had a team-high seven kills with three digs and two block assists. Ghyzel had six kills, DeRubertis and Shaw five each. Miranda and Ghyzel had a dozen assists apiece. Lapings had five, as did Michelle Nader. Carrasquilla (14), Hauer (13), and Apanavicius (10) posted double figures in digs.
 
With the Cortland tournament complete, Rochester is idle until next weekend when the Yellowjackets host their own Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
