The University of Rochester opened its 2019 Volleyball Invitational with a pair of victories in the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday evening. Rochester defeated Medaille College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-15). In the second game, the Yellowjackets won the first two sets against SUNY Cortland, then lost the next two sets before rallying for a stirring win in the fifth set to take the match, 3-2.

UR won the first two sets by identical scores of 25-15. Cortland took the third set, 25-20, and forced the tiebreaking set with a 25-23 victory in set four. Rochester captured the victory with a 15-8 win in the fifth set.

Korslund had 18 kills vs. Cortland
Beth Ghyzel posted a triple-double against Cortland. She finished with 10 kills, 22 assists, and 13 digs.
Kate Korslund and
Renae Lapins had double-doubles. Korslund recorded a game-high 18 kills and added 10 digs. Lapins had 15 assists and 12 digs.
Jessica Danner had 11 digs.

Tamera Shaw had six blocks (one solo, five assists) and Korslund had four block assists. Shaw added six kills.

For Cortland, Hannah Southcott had 13 kills and Nadia Moore had 10. Olivia Doorley had 22 digs. Carly Haegele dug 19 balls. Southcott had 15 and Moore finished with 11. Nicole Van Pelt and Bridgette Moran had three block assists. Camryn Anderson had one block solo and two assists.

Cortland, which defeated Medaille right after Rochester beat the Mavericks, is 3-3 overall. Rochester is 4-2 heading into Saturday matches against SUNY Canton at 11 am and St. John Fisher at 3 pm.

Five Yellowjackets had four or more kills in the match vs. Medaille. Shaw finished with 10 plus five blocks (two solo).
Allie DeRubertis and
Kellie McCrea had six kills apiece.
Hope Havenhill and Ghyzel had four.
Sara Apanavicius had 19 digs vs. the Mavericks. DeRubertis had 10. The assist leaders were Ghyzel with 14 and Lapins with 12.

Medaille's kills leader was Halle Bogas with five. Sierra Wells had 11 digs and 11 assists. Grace Appenheimer had 18 digs. Medaille is 1-5 after losses to UR and Cortland.
