University of Rochester senior center Ryan Algier (Fairport, NY/Fairport) has been named a pre-season All-American by Basketball Times, the official publication of the United States Basketball Writers Association.

This is the second recent All-America to come Algier's way (pronounced al-JEER). Earlier, he was named as an All-American by Small College Hoops (also known as DIIINews). He was named to the Fourth Team by Small College Hoops. Algier is one of two UAA players named to that publication's post-season All-America Team. Jack Nolan of Washington University-St. Louis was a Second Team All-American. Algier is only one of three East Region players named an All-American by Small College Hoops, joining players from SUNY Potsdam and RPI. A total of 25 players were named.

Basketball Times honored 25 players as Pre-Season All-Americans. Honorees are listed alphabetically, rather than by 'team'. He is one of three players from the University Athletic Association, joining individuals from Washington-St. Louis and Emory University. Basketball Times named four players from the East Region – Algier plus individuals from SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Cortland, and RPI.

This is the second major pre-season honor to come his way in the fall. In early September, he was selected as a Lysle "Spike" Garnish winner, designating him as one of the top 10 student-athletes in the senior class. The Garnish Award is presented for a combination of academic achievement, athletic skill, and community service through the junior year. He is a double major - data science and business.

At the end of his junior season, Algier was named a Third Team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was named a First Team All-East District by the NABC, Second Team All-East Region by D3hoops.com, and First Team All-UAA. He was named First Team All-Rochester Area by the USBWA.

Additionally, he was named to the UAA Presidents' Scholar-Athlete Team (awarded to First Team All-UAA honorees with a cumulative GPA above 3.50) and to the NABC Honors Court. He was  named First Team Academic All-District by CoSIDA and to the UAA's All-Academic Team. In May, he was selected as the winner of Rochester's John Vitone Award, presented for outstanding sportsmanship for intercollegiate sports.

Algier finished with a team-high 14.8 points per game, which ranked sixth in the UAA. His shooting percentage of 62% from the field and 1.8 blocks per game on defense led the UAA. He ended the campaign with seven double-doubles en route to Rochester finishing with a 16-9 regular season record.
