The University of Rochester has successfully completed its campaign to fully fund the James Klimschot '78 Endowment for the Men's Basketball Assistant Coach, surpassing its $500,000 goal and establishing the University's first endowed assistant coach position in the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
Created to honor the life and legacy of the late Jim Klimschot '78—a former Yellowjacket standout, assistant coach, Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, and revered leader whose life was cut short by colon cancer—the endowment recognizes the critical role assistant coaches play in mentoring student-athletes and shaping program excellence.
Made possible through a generous lead gift in 2024 by John '79 & Theresa '79 Mattioli and the collective support of teammates, friends, parents and alumni, the endowment ensures perpetual support for assistant coaches who embody Jim's passion, integrity, and commitment to students. This milestone provides a lasting tribute to Jim's impact and a powerful investment in the future of Rochester Men's Basketball.
Mattioli, thanks to his support and long-time commitment to URochester athletics over the years, was presented this past basketball season with the 2025-26 Lysle 'Spike' Garnish Memorial Citation Award.
This campaign is the second major announcement for men's basketball during the 2025-26 academic year, as the head men's basketball coaching position was also endowed. The gift made by Tyler Zachem '88 and his wife Karen, established the Mike and Connie Neer Family Head Men's Basketball Coach fund at the University.
