Ten From Athletic Teams Named Phi Beta Kappa

The University of Rochester chapter of the of the Phi Beta Kappa Society held its annual induction ceremony on Wednesday morning at the River Campus Strong Auditorium and several UR student-athletes joined the ranks in 2021.
 
Within the group, a total of 10 student-athletes, representing nine Rochester athletic teams were selected to the prestigious honors organization.
 
Those selected included Ryan Algier (men's basketball), Eric Chang (men's swimming & diving), Andres Garcia Coleto (men's track & field/cross country), Sofia Guarnieri (women's swimming & diving, elected in 2020), Kari Leap (women's track and field), Trent Noordsij (men's basketball), Mary Panepento (lacrosse), Alexis Pope (softball), Ximena Reyes Torres (women's track & field/cross country) and Elisabeth Rott (women's track & field/cross country).
 
Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is by invitation only, as there is no application procedure. New members each spring are elected by current members of the Iota chapter, coming at the recommendation of the nomination committee. Approximately 10% of each graduating class is elected.
 
Iota of New York is the University of Rochester's chapter of the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization, the Phi Beta Kappa Society and was founded in 1887.
 
Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa invites for induction the most outstanding students at America's leading colleges and universities. The society champions the liberal arts—the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences—in higher education and in society at large.
