PHILADELPHIA, PA – Four members of the University of Rochester squash team went a combined 7-1 in their matches on day one of the College Squash Association Individual Championships at the Penn Squash Center on Friday evening.
UR had four entrants, all in the Molloy (B Division) brackets, with the top seeds
Yash Fadte and
Cesar Segundo both posting 3-0 sweeps in their two wins. The Yellowjackets #2 seeded
Abdelrahman Lasheen also swept two matches, with
Luis Moncada posting a 1-1 record from his ninth-seeded spot.
Fadte breezed through Rithik Jalali of Vassar in his round of 16 match, tidying up his opponent 11-4, 11-3 and 11-4. In round two, Fadte was an 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 winner over Trinity's Julius Benthin. In the semifinals he will face Nathan Kueh of Penn.
In the Molloy North bracket, Segundo earned a quick win in the first match of the day, defeating Fordham's Patrick Rodden 11-4, 11-1 and 11-0. In round two, he squared off against MIT's Aman Sanger and won 11-7, 11-6 and 11-6. That match was a rematch from two weeks ago in the UR-MIT quarterfinal at the CSA Team Championships. In round three Princeton's Cole Becker is the opponent.
UR's other two players competed in the Molloy East region. Lasheen fought off set points in the opening game against Matthew Wang and won in three, 13-11, 11-7 and 11-4. Round two Lasheen again needed extra balls in one of the sets, but posted another sweep, 11-4, 14-12 and 11-9. He takes on Karim Elbarbary of Princeton in the semifinals.
Moncada, a midseason transfer from Chatham battled a former teammate in Abdul Malik in the opening round and fell by a 3-0 score (11-9, 11-6, 11-8). The UR sophomore rebounded in the consolation bracket with a sweep of Denison's Tarun Mammen 11-6, 11-4 and 11-9.
Winners from the main draws of each of the four Molloy Division's will earn CSA Second Team All-American honors. The tournament runs through Sunday.
