PHILADELPHIA – Senior
Cesar Segundo will play for All-American honors on Sunday following a semifinal win in the Molloy North bracket at the College Squash Association Individual Championships at the Penn Squash Center.
Segundo was one of four Yellowjackets playing on Saturday, as Rochester's contingent posted a 7-1 record across its matches during the opening day of play.
Joining Segundo in staying alive for a Sunday final round match is sophomore
Luis Moncada who will play for the consolation title in the Molloy West bracket.
Segundo needed four games to win his semifinal match over Cole Becker of Princeton to set up the championship match against Haris Qasim of Drexel. The UR senior, the top seed in the Molloy North region rallied in his match after Becker opened with an 11-7 win. Segundo rattled off 11-9, 11-5 and 12-10 wins to earn his spot in the finals.
Qasim, the regions third seeded player, defeated #2 James Wyatt in three games to reach the championship match, with All-American honors at stake.
Moncada, competing in the consolation round after falling in his opening match on Friday, reached the finals of his bracket with a four game win over Zain Ahmed of Princeton. Moncada's win was similar to Segundo's, in that the sophomore fell behind after the first game, but scored three straight set wins to earn the victory. The final score was 4-11, 11-9, 11-2 and 11-8. Moncada squares off against Adam Lichtmacher of Amherst on Sunday.
The two other Rochester players in action saw their season come to a close with losses in main draw semifinals.
Abdelrahman Lasheen, the second seed in the Molloy East bracket, dropped a four game match to Princeton's Karim Elbarbary 5-11, 11-5, 11-7 and 14-12.
First-year
Yash Fadte ended up in a tight battle with Penn's Nathan Kueh in his match, with Kueh sitting up 2-1 after three games, all which ended by an 11-9 score. In the third, Fadte unfortunately had to retire, giving the match win to Kueh.
Lasheen ends his season with a team best 13 victories, while Fadte finishes the 2021-22 season with 12 match wins, second best on the Yellowjackets.
On Sunday, Segundo's match starts at 9:30 am, with Moncada taking to the court about an hour later.
