PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University of Rochester squash team split a pair of matches on the final day of the College Squash Association Individual Championships to conclude its 2021-22 season.
Sophomore
Luis Moncada captured the Molloy West consolation bracket with a tough five-game win, while senior
Cesar Segundo fell in Molloy North main draw championship match by a 3-1 score.
Moncada's victory came against Adam Lichtmacher of Amherst College. Moncada, playing with a bit of size disadvantage, needed to use his quickness and some crafty shot making throughout the match to earn the victory against the 14th-seeded player.
Moncada, the 9th seed in the original main draw in the East division, took the opening game 11-6. Lichtmacher responded in the second by jumping out to a big, early lead and earned an 11-5 win to even the match. The pair traded wins in the third and fourth games as well, with Moncada going up 2-1 after an 11-8 win, only to see Lichtmacher even it up with an 11-7 win in game four.
In the fifth set, the score was tight early, evened up at 4-all before Moncada rattled off five straight points to surge ahead 9-4. Lichtmacher got one point back to make the score 9-5, but Moncada earned the next two points, the final on a terrific forehand nick winner to post an 11-5 final set win.
With the three wins at nationals, Moncada closes his first season in UR colors with a 9-6 match record.
Rochester's lone senior, Segundo, dropped the final match of his career to Haris Qasim of Drexel, with All-America honors on the line in the Molloy North championship. Segundo finishes the 2021-22 season with an 11-9 record playing #1 in all 16 matches for the Yellowjackets. For his career, the Mexico native ends with 36 wins over three seasons.
On Sunday, Qasim jumped to the lead with 11-5 victories in the opening two games. In the third game, Segundo steadied his play and came away with an 11-8 win to keep the match going.
During the fourth, Segundo was up early, but Qasim chipped away to get to 9-all. The next point was a brilliant nick by Segundo to grab a set point, up 10-9. Qasim was not fazed though, and scored the next three points to shock the regions top seed with a 12-10 win.
