GENEVA, OH – The two University of Rochester men's track and field qualifiers displayed some great skill in their respective events on Thursday afternoon on day one at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Sophomore
Aeden Angelone competed in the first five events of the decathlon and junior
Scott Sikorski ran in the preliminaries of the 1500 meters.
For Sikorski, he booked a spot into Saturday's final after qualifying seventh in the prelims with a time of 3:50.15. He finished fourth in his heat, earning one of the automatic qualifying spots into the final which will be run at approximately 12:35 on Saturday. Overall, 13 runners advanced to the final, where the top-8 finishers will earn All-America accolades.
The outdoor championship is the third NCAA appearance for Sikorski in this calendar year. In the fall he represented UR cross country at the Division III Cross Country finals and earlier in the spring semester, he ran in the 800 meters.
Angelone's time in the 100 meters was a new PR.
Angelone currently sits in 16th place after have of the 10-event decathlon schedule was completed on Thursday.
On day one, Angelone set a new personal-best in the first event of the day, the 100 meters, scoring 755 points after running a time of 11.49 seconds. He followed by earning 569 points for a 5.92 meter long jump.
The sophomore was terrific in the shot put, placing sixth among the 20 competitors in the field with a toss of 12.25 meters, scoring 622 points. That mark established a new outdoor PR. He added a ninth place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters (696 points), just one centimeter off his personal-best.
To close the day, Angelone was 13th fastest in the 400 meters, clocking in at 52.16 seconds, adding 718 points to his score.
On Friday's day two, action begins at 10 am with the 110 meter hurdles. The rest of the decathlon events later on Friday include the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
The meet is being conducted at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, being hosted by the University of Mount Union and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.
