Three Into Singles Semifinals at SLU Fall Classic

CANTON, NY – Three singles players, including two in the A Flight draw are headed to semifinal matches after day one of competition has wrapped up at the St. Lawrence Fall Classic.
 
Rochester's top singles entries, Krish Vennam and Kai Yuminaga, along with D Flight player Alex Kulvivat are all still alive in the main draws after winning a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon.
 
Vennam, the #3 seed in the bracket, started out strong with an 8-1 win over Grahith Movva of RIT in the opening round. He followed that up with an 8-5 victory in round two over Hyat Oyer of Hobart.
 
Yuminaga will play in the other semifinal after upsetting fourth-seeded Harry Lu of Hobart 8-6 in his opening match. Yuminaga then dispacted Nathan Turtledove of St. Lawrence 8-3 in the quarterfinals, earning his semifinal spot.
 
In the D Flight singles competition, Kulvivat earned an 8-5 victory over St. Lawrence's Guy Holbrook in the first round. The UR first-year player added an 8-1 win to his record in the next round, moving on in the main draw of his competition.
 
All the other Yellowjacket competitors lost at least one match on the day and are no longer in contention for main draw titles.
 
Rochester's B Flight singles entries, Kavin Shukla and Sid Tirupati each went 1-1, posting first round wins. Shukla won over Verosh Jayanetti of RIT 8-2 before succumbing to the top-seed, Sean Pesin of Hobart in round two. Tirupati won 8-5 over Union's Tommy McGuire before being defeated in his next match by the same score, falling to Nick Fischer.
 
Kei Ogawa won his first round match in the C singles bracket, topping Ithaca's Ean Lantzy, but top-seed Nicholas Gritz of Hamilton stopped his run, defeating the UR junior 8-5 in the next match. Two others, Rahul Ravi and Ahaan Malhotra dropped their opening main draw match, but rebounded with wins, staying alive in their consolation brackets.
 
Joining Kulvivat in the D Flight singles was John Hui, who earned an opening round win over Will de Chabert of SLU. Hui won in a tight match, 8-7, before being defeated by Union's Khai Ton 8-3 in the next round.
 
All four of Rochester's doubles teams earned first round wins before bowing out of the draw in the second round. Vennam and Ravi paired for an 8-1 win over St. Lawrence, while Yuminaga and Shukla posted an 8-6 victory against SLU. Those teams competed in the A Flight draw.
 
In the B doubles bracket, Malhotra and Hui won 8-7 (5) in the opening round over an RIT combo, with Tirupati and Ogawa posting an 8-5 victory against Hobart.
