CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester tennis team wrapped up its first competition of the 2022-23 season on Sunday at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic.
Overall, Rochester posted several wins but unfortunately was unable to take home any of the main draw titles. Sophomore
Krish Vennam earned a spot in the main draw finals of the A singles bracket, while first-year
Rahul Ravi was a C singles consolation champion.
Vennam reached the semifinals with two wins on Saturday and continued his run with an 8-4 win over Ioannis Binopoulos of Union. In the championship match, Connor Griff of Hamilton bested the Yellowjacket sophomore by an 8-2 score to claim the title. In other A Flight singles action,
Kai Yuminaga was edged by Griff in the other semifinal, battling in an 8-7 (10-8) loss.
The other main draw competitor on Sunday was first-year
Alex Kulvivat in the D singles bracket. The UR rookie fell to Cole Hamilton of St. Lawrence by an 8-5 score in semifinals.
Ravi, the C Flight singles consolation winner, posted two wins on Sunday to end his weekend on a three-match winning streak. In the consolation semifinals, he bested teammate
Ahaan Malhotra 8-7 (7-4) before topping St. Lawrence's Joh Hill-Edgar 8-5 in the final match.
The Yellowjackets complete the abbreviated fall schedule at the ITA Regional Championships over the September 30-October 2 weekend.
