Yellowjackets Open ITA Regional Play With Multiple Wins

CLINTON, NY – Several University of Rochester women's tennis players competed on Friday at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, with one singles player and one doubles team surviving in the main draw after day one of play at Hamilton College.
 
Sophomore Josephine Libby won two matches in singles and one in doubles with first-year teammate Sanjana Karnam to reach the round of 16 in both draws.
 
Additionally, first-year Jasmin Toor posted a first round win in singles before being bested in round two by a seeded player from NYU.
 
Libby, the top seed in the singles bracket earned two straight set wins on Friday to reach the third round. In her opening match, she topped Chase Eiseberg of TCNJ 6-1, 6-3. The sophomore All-American then followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the second match over Sofie Shen from Vassar.
 
In doubles, Libby and Karnam were 8-5 winners in the opening round over a team from Ithaca, advancing to Saturday's second round. The Yellowjacket pair are seeded 5-8 in the doubles bracket.
 
UR's other doubles team of Stephanie Kim and Toor were defeated in the opening round 8-3 by a seeded team from Skidmore.
 
Toor's victory in the singles opening round came against RPI's Sabrina Grewal by a 6-2, 6-0 score. In round two, the UR first-year player was matched up with Ida Krause of NYU, the 4th seed in the draw. Krause earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory to eliminate Toor from the main draw.
 
Both Kim and Neha Dania also competed in singles for Rochester but were defeated in the opening round and were forced into the consolation bracket. Dania lost 6-4, 6-4 to Elyse Duley of Vassar while Kim was defeated 6-0, 6-2 by Gabriella Gatto of Union 6-0, 6-2.

Karnam was another Yellowjacket that competed in the singles. She lost first round to Iris Li of Vassar 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in one of the most competitive matches of the day. 
 
Saturday's matches begin with the doubles at 9 am, with Libby's singles third round taking place at approximately 10:45 am.
