GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester women's tennis team enjoyed strong play in 'A' doubles and 'C' singles action on day one of the William Smith College Mary Hosking Invitational on Saturday.

Two of URochester's three doubles teams in action on the day went unbeaten, reaching the main draw semifinals of the 'A' doubles bracket. Those teams were made up of Katie Yang who played alongside Hayley Menon and Lauren Kallas who ended up playing with Noel Allen.

Yang and Menon were winners in the opening round against Ellie Fritz and Sarah Oldland of St. Lawrence by an 8-5 score. During the second round, UR triumphed 8-6 against Grace Magna and Lillian Stukovsky of host William Smith. In the semifinal round on Sunday, the UR duo is matched up against Alys Pop and Aa Casell of Ithaca.

For Kallas and Allen, the combo enjoyed an 8-6 opening round win over Melanie Saborio and Kai Wells from RIT. During the quarterfinals, the Yellowjackets outlasted the team of Madeleine Sutro and Zuri Freeman by a 9-8 (3) set score. During their semi, Kallas and Allen will square off with Yvette and Ariane Karera of St. Lawrence.

In the singles action, UR's Lilly Caldwell and Aiza Ahmed combined to go 4-0 and both reached the semifinals. Caldwell was an easy 8-2 winner against Megan Woods of Union in the opening round before dispatching Kathryn Schade 8-1 in the quarterfinal round. Caldwell's matchup in the semifinals is William Smith's Lucy Hudson.

Ahmed posted two 8-4 wins during her run to the semifinals on Saturday. She started her day by defeating Caroline Fitzsimmons of SLU before winning against William Smith's Elizabeth Gardner in the second round. She battles St. Lawrence's Sarah Oldland for a spot in the finals on Sunday morning.

UR had three entries in the 'B' singles draw, with sophomore Hailey Kornbluth still sitting alive after day one. Kornbluth won over Ava Casell of Ithaca 8-6 during round one and then breezed past RIT's Melanie Saborio in the quarters by an 8-1 score. She takes on Ellie Fritz of St. Lawrence in the next round.

Both Menon and Kallas won their opening round matches during the 'B' singles draw, but fell in the quarterfinals. Kallas earned an 8-4 win over Union's Jennifer Park, while Menon topped Addison Jones of St. Lawrence 8-3. Both fell by 8-6 scores in round two.

In the 'A' flight singles bracket, Allen posted an 8-4 victory in the opening round over Katelyn Gray of William Smith, but lost to Ariane Karera by the same score in the quarterfinals. Yang also competed in the 'A' draw but lost in both of her matches on Saturday.
